Organization Description

The Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (DMHSAS) is charged with planning for and promoting an array of services from prevention and early intervention to resiliency and recovery. The Department oversees four Regional Mental Health Institutes (RMHIs) and contracts with mental health and substance abuse community providers across the state to offer services to Tennesseans. The Department manages a budget of more than $300 million, with funding from dedicated fees, revenue, federal grants, and state general fund appropriations.

Middle Tennessee Mental Health Institute (MTMHI) is a psychiatric hospital that has been serving 17 counties in Middle Tennessee since 1995. Hospitalizations are on a voluntary or involuntary basis, or patients can also be referred by the court system for pre-trial evaluations. The hospital offers 4 long-term care units, 3 short-term care units, forensic services, and therapeutic treatment units for a total of 207 beds. Middle Tennessee Mental Health Institute’s mission is to provide quality care to the patients and families served by meeting their needs and continuously striving to exceed expectations.

Job Responsibilities

Summary of Position

As a Training Specialist 2, you will be responsible for:

  • Coordinating new employee orientation to include scheduling trainers for hospital-specific training, providing human resources training, recording the training in the electronic learning management system (ELM), and acting as the point of contact for new employees during the orientation period
  • Becoming a Department of Human Resources (DOHR) certified facilitator and completing the required train-the-trainer courses for DOHR classes; this will allow the training specialist to teach all of the DOHR training materials required for all state employees
  • Assisting with technical training of hospital-specific software including electronic clinical records and the timekeeping system
  • Scheduling, coordinating, and conducting needed training classes and maintaining the classroom calendar
  • Inputting and maintaining training records in the ELM system and assisting with maintaining any paper files required by Joint Commission
  • Ensuring that that hospital staff is compliant with Joint Commission required training including CPR and patient de-escalation training.
  • Being customer-focused which requires developing relationships with each division of the hospital, being knowledgeable about the training catalog, and recommending classes as needed
  • Learning about the state human resources functions and processes

Qualifications

Education / Experience

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree and experience equivalent to one year of full-time work in one or a combination of the following: teaching; educational administration; development of instructional materials for academic programs; or professional training.

Any teaching or training experience, or any remaining professional experience may be substituted for the required education, on a year-for-year basis, to a maximum of four years.

-OR-

Additional graduate course work in one or a combination of the following may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis, to a maximum of one year: (1) Human Resources Management; (2) Industrial/Organizational Psychology; or (3) any field related to the design or evaluation of curriculum and related instructional processes, including, but not limited to Curriculum and Instruction, Educational/Instructional Media Design, or Educational Evaluation, Research, and Statistics. (e.g., 36 graduate quarter hours may be substituted for one year of required experience).

-OR-

One year of professional experience with the State of Tennessee either delivering workforce training or working as an Admin Services Assistant in a training assignment.
