Job Summary

The Tornado Recovery Connection Project Director will oversee the Tennessee Conferences’ efforts to support recovery in Middle Tennessee following the March 3, 2020 tornadoes. Such recovery responsibilities include overall project management, staff supervision, reporting, maintaining and expanding partner relationships with long-term recovery groups and other community agencies, along with spiritual care to ensure a (w)holistic and balanced approach to assist survivors and support staff.

This position is an up to one-year, seasonal staff position funded by a grant from the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). The position is a classified as seasonal and will not provide a benefits package beyond salary and travel support.

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Work with ecumenical and civic community partners in all counties impacted by the March 3, 2020 tornadoes to address and coordinate recovery efforts on behalf of the Tennessee Conference of The United Methodist Church and UMCOR. Assist in the development of robust long-term recoveries in alignment with the conference’s mission and values.
  • Review weekly reports and activities of the recovery personnel. Meet regularly with them to identify and resolve problems. Monitor the effectiveness of service delivery.
  •  Develop forms, policies, procedures related to the recovery program.
  • Provide leadership, make decisions, solve problems, develop procedures, develop records/files, draft summary reports, conduct meetings, represent the conference at internal and external meetings.
  • Maintain quality by promoting service delivery in accordance with UMCOR disaster recovery model, the National VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) Points of Consensus, and the National VOAD Disaster Case Management Guidance.
  • Maintain statistical data relating to the project. Complete and deliver regular reports to UMCOR.
  • Maintain contact with UMC pastors, congregations and civic community leaders in affected areas of the conference to assess ongoing recovery efforts and needs. 
  • Participate in regular communication of disaster response efforts.
  • Provide regular updates on relief and recovery efforts and needs to the Office of the Bishop, Conference Director of Connectional Ministries, Conference Communications, and Conference Disaster Response Team. 
  • Meet with congregations in affected areas to help them discern the needs of their members and neighbors and how they might respond. If appropriate, assist in preparation of proposals for funding response initiatives.
  • Provide other duties and responsibilities as directed by the Director of Connectional Ministries.

Supervisory Duties:

  • Supervise all recovery project staff.

Qualifications

  • An appreciation of the nature and mission of the church.
  • Ability to organize, coordinate and manage multiple priorities and projects.
  • Ability to build, maintain and develop professional and support staff.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint and MS Outlook.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with multiple agencies and entities.
  • Strong attention to accuracy and completeness.
  • Ability to organize, coordinate and review the work of staff.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills with the ability to present information individually, in small groups or in large sessions.
  • Ability to compassionately communicate with tornado survivors.
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a team / committee environment.
  • High standards for protecting financial information, client information, sharing confidential information only as agreed upon by the client and as evidenced by a signed release form.
  • Ability to demonstrate cultural competency and sensitivity relative to the population served.

Benefits

  • Flexible schedule to allow for occasional night and weekend hours.
  • Salary range starts at $40,000
  • Travel expenses will be reimbursed if/when travel is required.
  • Cell phone will be provided.

Stipulations:

  • The position is a classified as seasonal and will not provide a benefits package beyond salary and travel support.  Seasonal positions are not eligible for conference health plan and pension benefits.
  • Because of the Conference’s non-profit status, its employees are not eligible for unemployment benefits.
