Job Summary

TIRRC is seeking an Immigration Attorney to provide immigration consultations and representation for individuals seeking immigration benefits before USCIS and EOIR. In addition, they will be responsible for program outreach and development, providing legal consultations and representation, and developing relationships with key partners in the implementation of the program.

Job Responsibilities

Legal Services and Support

  • Assess individuals’ eligibility for immigration benefits at consultations;
  • Assist individuals with the completion of the appropriate applications (e.g. acquired citizenship, DACA renewals, and green card renewals) with potential to expand into other cases as appropriate;
  • Provide education on relevant policies and case procedures to clients;
  • Provide legal oversight at workshops when applicable;
  • Perform accurate legal research and regularly monitor developments in immigration law and procedure;
  • Advocate for clients before USCIS and EOIR;
  • Conduct strategic community outreach to promote awareness about TIRRC programs;
  • Conduct community presentations on immigration topics such as “Know Your Rights;”
  • Develop relationships with organizing partners and explore collaborative opportunities with potential allies.

Case Management

  • Provide case management of immigration applicants including but not limited to: maintaining client files, drafting cover letters, preparing application packets, reviewing case files;
  • Plan, monitor and evaluate effectiveness of program activities and implement best practices;
  • Follow up on pending case work and maintain communication with clients;
  • Respond to all phone calls and email inquiries on immigration issues in a timely manner;
  • Assess community needs and barriers to services, and develop recommendations for solutions;
  • Other legal services and support as assigned.

Organizational Support

  • Coordinate with Legal Services Coordinator for immigration and citizenship events and meetings;
  • Participate in ongoing immigration law training and professional development;
  • Represent TIRRC at community events, conferences, to the media, and to other organizations as 
  • needed; 
  • Ensure all data is maintained in the organizational database.

Qualifications

  • Belief in TIRRC’s mission and experience with social justice;
  • J.D. required and Tennessee bar admission preferred;
  • Minimum 2 years experience providing immigration legal services, immigration court experience strongly preferred;
  • Experience with the intersection of immigration and criminal law preferred;  
  • Ability to be very organized, work on deadlines, and juggle multiple priorities and cases;.
  • Ability to work sensitively with clients who have diverse personalities, lifestyles, cultures, and faiths;
  • Ability to coordinate and advance strategies within a coalition and internal team in a rapidly moving environment;
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends;
  • Fluency in English required and another language preferred;
  • Must have reliable transportation.

Benefits

Salary Range: $55,000-$65,000
Benefits: Full-time TIRRC employees are eligible to receive medical, dental, and vision insurance with 100% of the medical employee premium covered by TIRRC, participate in a 401K retirement plan, and receive 24/7 access to an Employee Assistance Program. In addition, TIRRC provides paid leave including up to 15 vacation days, 13 paid holidays, and 3 weeks paid sick leave in an employee’s first year and 6 weeks of paid parental leave.
