Job Summary

Position Summary:  The Staff Accountant contributes to the efforts of United Way of Greater Nashville (UWGN) by performing accounting and financial tasks within the guidelines of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and United Way Worldwide Standards in order to ensure accounting procedures are compliant and accurately processed.   This position is responsible for showing UWGN as a good steward of funds through financial tracking, reporting, accountability, and internal controls of UWGN’s finances focusing on fiscal monitoring of grant revenue and contracts.  Through the work of the Staff Accountant, UWGN can ensure its accounting procedures and systems are fiscally sound and allow UWGN to accomplish its mission: to create a community where individuals, families, and neighborhoods thrive.   

Job Responsibilities

  • Updates, verifies, and maintains journal entries, expense allocations, ledgers, expense reimbursements, and other financial records to keep an accurate account of earnings and expenditures
  • Performs account reconciliations of balance sheet accounts as requested in order to ensure accounting procedures are complaint and accurately processed
  • Assists with the preparation of monthly invoicing to granting agencies
  • Responsible for effectively researching, tracking and resolving (or properly referring) accounting or documentation problems and discrepancies as a part of UWGN’s internal accounting controls
  • Assists with preparation and participates in annual financial statement and other grant related audits
  • Executes bank reconciliations against the general ledger
  • Assists in maintaining UWGN’s donor database including:
    • Preparing designation payouts
    • Manages inquiries from donors and agencies
    • Maintaining donor database with up-to-date information from agencies and communicating changes to appropriate staff
    • Provide portal access to agencies
    • Assists with review of processed deposits and communicating adjustments to appropriate staff
    • Provide online contribution reports to staff for processing
    • Assists with processing deposits during high volume periods
  • Maintains files and documentation thoroughly and accurately, in accordance with company policy and accepted accounting practices

Special projects and performing other job-related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Experience:
    • 1-3 years of progressive accounting experience is preferred
    • Basic skills in utilizing Microsoft Dynamics GP
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
    • Performs activities under minimal supervision
  • Knowledge:
    • Non-profit (fund) accounting
    • Grant management/invoicing preferred, not required
    • Bank reconciliation
    • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
