Project Return helps people who are coming back from prison. Our mission is to provide services and connect people with resources needed to return successfully to work and community after incarceration. For over four decades, Project Return has done the work of reentry in Nashville, facilitating job search, job placement, and job retention, as well as providing wraparound intensive case management and a broad array of assistance and support, for people who come to Project Return with the determination to make a new beginning after incarceration. Project Return opened its second location in Chattanooga, TN in 2021.
Position Description:
The Staff Accountant, under general supervision, conducts a wide variety of intricate and complex accounting duties and projects within the guidelines of the organization. An ideal candidate for the Staff Accountant role should be savvy in SGA Accounting Software, or similar accounting software, and proficient in Excel, have excellent organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills with the ability to flourish in a team-oriented environment. The Staff Accountant must be able to complete assignments within designated timelines and have a strong sense of integrity and ethical values. The Staff Accountant will perform financial analysis and invoicing of assigned grants and contracts, ensuring that the assigned accounts are managed in accordance with GAAP standards and regulatory requirements for the not-for-profit industry as well as agency accounting procedures and internal controls.
A successful candidate for this position is responsible for accounts receivable/payable entry, bank and credit card reconciliation, general ledger management, grant billing, client invoicing, assisting in month closing, and maintaining excellent backup. Must be a self-motivated, reliable individual interested in joining our growing organization.
Job Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include:
- Maintains and updates the general ledger system by the reconciliation of accounts payable, payroll, and accounts receivable, ensuring that all financial reports are balanced.
- Performs general ledger account analysis and reconciliation, including bank statements, fixed assets, accruals, prepaid expenses, and intercompany reconciliations.
- Entering, reviewing, and processing accounts payable transactions, ensuring that all invoices and staff reimbursements are recorded and paid accurately.
- Records Payroll entries and reviews payroll account reconciliations.
- Enters and reviews credit card expense reports and receipts submitted by cardholders on a monthly basis.
- Records the processing of cash receipts, revenue, and receivables while working closely with the program teams to ensure that revenues and receivables are reconciled at any given time.
- Monitors open A/R balances.
- Assists with the preparation of reimbursement requests, correspondence, and expenditure reports for grants and contracts.
- Assists the CFO with the day-to-day, monthly, and year-end operations of the fiscal department.
- Assists with all monthly journal entries including investment, prepaid, accruals, fixed assets depreciation, A/R, and some cost allocation while maintaining related Excel spreadsheets.
- Processes functional expense allocations, monthly accruals, amortization of prepaid expenses, fixed assets depreciation, and records adjusting and reclassification of journal entries, if necessary.
- Prepares and maintains audit schedules throughout the year pertaining to assigned areas of responsibility for use by independent auditors.
- Assists in financial year-end closing, annual audit, and grants and contracts audit
- Coordinates with the Housing Director on variance reports, AR/bad debt review, and lease activity.
- Assists with implementing and maintaining internal financial controls and procedures.
- Performs special projects as assigned by the CFO.
- Corresponds professionally with all levels within and outside the organization.
- Documents not-for-profit unique financial reporting requirements and maintains work papers consistent with new accounting standards.

Qualifications
Requirements/Qualifications:
- Minimum 3 years experience in not-for-profit accounting; grant experience preferred.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting preferred.
- Demonstrate strong not-for-profit accounting knowledge and experience as it applies to the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Must be able to prepare or review journal entries and complex underlying supporting schedules and documents with the ability to explain such analysis to non-financial staff.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles related to classifying, recording, and summarizing data and making computations to compile financial records.
- Solid understanding and demonstrated proficiency in Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
- Ability to provide exceptional client service with a highly professional demeanor and ability to handle matters confidentially.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to effectively communicate with all levels including clients, team members, and team leadership.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Strong attention to detail with a focus on accuracy.
- Ability to handle stress and work well under pressure and with minimal supervision.
- Knowledge of SGA Accounting Software is a plus.
- Experienced in Microsoft Office Suite with proficiency in Excel.
