What does the Cheekwood Retail Team do and why join our team?
At Cheekwood, the retail team oversees the operations of three shops on the grounds. Their primary focus lies in curating a shopping experience that appeals to our visitors and ties into our gardens and mansion. This entails maintaining and organizing the store, providing exceptional customer service, and driving sales. Additionally, the retail team assists in organizing special events within the garden and plays a vital role in generating revenue to support the garden’s mission and ongoing programs.
What will you be doing?
The selected candidate will join our retail team working alongside another Retail Coordinator and reporting to the Director of Retail. This role involves tasks such as inventory management, product placement, customer service, and event coordination. This position will drive sales and manage the daily operations of Cheekwood’s multiple gift shops. Cheekwood has three gift shops on the property. The NEW Garden Shop features décor, gifts, and children’s items. The Museum Shop sells jewelry, art, and books. There is also a Holiday Marketplace open from November as well as multiple pop-up events throughout the year.

Job Responsibilities
- Training, motivating, and mentoring part-time retail staff.
- Communicating customer service and sales expectations to staff regularly
- Responsible for tracking store sales, meeting monthly revenue goals and actively adjusting when necessary to improve results.
- Monitoring part-time staff time and attendance
- Reviewing individual performance with staff and coaching as necessary
- Provide training to Retail Sales Associates and assist in the hiring process.
- Work closely with the Retail Director to maintain visual standards throughout the store and place new merchandise on the sales floor.
- Maintain an organized stockroom and backstock system.
- Inventory Management
- Implement loss prevention best practices and maintain low shrinkage.
- Receive shipments in a timely manner and ensure the accuracy of packing slips and invoices.
- Communicate with the Director of Retail about RTVs, claims, and inventory discrepancies.
- Enter purchase orders into the POS system, creating descriptions, categorizing, and pricing items.
- Analyze sales trends, sell-through, and pricing policies to ensure profitability.
- Responsible for monitoring opening/closing procedures within the Gift Shops.
- Operates Point of Sale system – completing sales, returns, and various other transactions.
- Be present on the sales floor during peak times and events and ensure proper floor coverage.
- Maintain online shop – taking product photos, uploading product descriptions and item images. Fulfilling web orders in a timely manner
- Occasionally assist with social media posts, including taking photos and writing copy
- Work with other departments at Cheekwood to drive visitors to Retail – including Marketing, Visitor Services, Education, and Membership
Qualifications
- Retail Leadership experience is required.
- Experience in Inventory Management systems and receiving.
- Proven track record of meeting sales goals
- Proficient in Microsoft 365 (Sharepoint, Outlook, Word, Excel)
- Excellent writing skills and attention to detail
- Strong organizational and analytical skills
- Ability to maintain an e-commerce site, including staging and taking photos, editing photos, and copywriting.
- Knowledge of merchandise and ability to upsell.
- Pleasant service-oriented demeanor and strong customer service skills
- Great interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work with diverse staff, customers, and vendors.
- Flexible schedule – must work 32-40 hours each week including several nights & most weekends throughout the year.
- Willing to walk/stand for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs with frequent lifting/carrying.
- This position includes (or may include) working with or supervising volunteers.
