Job Summary

Catholic Charities has multiple openings for the position of Refugee Youth Program Staff in its Refugee and Immigration Services Department. This position is part time, approximately 16-20 hours per week and is located at the Catholic Pastoral Center at 2806 McGavock Pike, Nashville, TN 37214. Hours are typically between 2:30pm-7:00pm Monday through Thursday.

Job Responsibilities

The primary functions of this position are to assist in transportation and program implementation of the Refugee Youth Program (RYP). Program participants in the after-school program range from 5-14 years old. RYP operates year-round with the exception of the months of May and August. During off months, program planning and enrollment for next program cycle takes place, as well as staff training sessions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Using an Agency vehicle, transports a maximum of 14 program participants from up to two schools to the program site. At the conclusion of the program day, returns participants to their individual homes, ensuring that at least one parent or guardian receives the child.
  2. Assists in program implementation, management, and evaluation.
  3. Plans and implements daily activities for refugee youth in the after-school program such as facilitating completion of homework      assignments, engaging in recreational activities, etc.
  4. Ensures all client files are accurate, complete, and up to date.
  5. Monitors participant successes and struggles, helping them to problem solve when appropriate.
  6. Promotes the program within the community by responding to questions from parents or schools regarding program activities      and requirements.
  7. Must participate in twelve (12) hours of in-service training annually.
  8. Regular work attendance.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned by the Coordinator or Director.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
  2. Prefer prior experience working with refugees and/or youth.
  3. Prior experience tutoring or teaching is desirable.

OTHER SKILLS OR REQUIREMENTS

  1. Must be at least 21 years old.
  2. Must have valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  3. Knowledge of child behavior and development.
  4. Must be physically, mentally, and emotionally stable.
  5. Must have documentation of being capable of providing care for children in a group setting.
  6. When deemed necessary by the Tennessee Department of Education, must provide a statement of mental or emotional health from a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist.
  7. Ability to work under pressure and with people from other cultures/countries.
  8. Excellent interpersonal skills.
  9. Sufficient maturity for providing leadership to children.
  10. Must agree to obtain a physical every three (3) years.
  11. Trauma training certification or experience is desirable.
  12. Bilingual in any refugee foreign language is helpful.
  13. Must work effectively and cooperatively with others.
  14. Good knowledge of community resources as it relates to refugee youth.
  15. Willingness to submit to and render a clear criminal background screening.
  16. Prefer current certification in CPR with knowledge of basic first aid.
  17. Must be able to drive agency-owned minivan or bus to transport children.
