Shifts: Monday – Thursday 2:30 PM – 7:00 PM

SUMMARY  

Catholic Charities has an opening for the position of Refugee Youth Afterschool Program Staff for the fall semester in its New Americans Department. This position is part-time, approximately 16-20 hours per week, and is located at the Catholic Pastoral Center at 2806 McGavock Pike, Nashville, TN 37214. Hours are typically between 2:30 pm-7:00 pm Monday through Thursday.

Job Responsibilities

The primary functions of this position are to assist in transportation and program implementation of the Refugee Youth Program (RYP). Program participants in the after-school program range from 5-14 years old. RYP operates year-round with the exception of the months of May, December, and August. During off months, program planning and enrollment for the next program cycle take place, as well as staff training sessions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists in program implementation, management, and evaluation of program activities and curriculum for the refugee youth program. 
  • Uses an Agency vehicle to transport a maximum of 14 program participants from school(s) to the program site. At the conclusion of the program day, returns participants to their individual homes, ensuring that at least one parent or guardian receives the child.
  • Plans and implements daily activities for refugee youth in the afterschool program such as facilitating completion of homework assignments, engaging in recreational activities, etc. 
  • Monitors participant successes and struggles, helping them to problem solve when appropriate. 
  • Promotes the program within the community by responding to questions from parents or schools regarding program activities and requirements.
  • Participates in twelve (12) hours of in-service training annually.
  • Maintains accurate client/program records regarding services provided according to Agency guidelines, using the database(s) provided by the agency and within the Agency’s time frame.
  • Actively participates in supervision sessions, periodic team meetings, and training.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or GED with 2 or more years of related experience OR associate degree, preferably in social work.
  • Prefer prior experience working with refugees and/or youth. 
  • Prior experience tutoring or teaching is desirable. 

OTHER SKILLS OR REQUIREMENTS 

  • Proficiency in one or more refugee languages with a preference for Swahili, Kinyarwanda, Dari, Arabic, Burmese, Somalia, Ukrainian, Russian, Spanish, or Kurdish.
  • Knowledge of child behavior and development
  • Sufficient maturity for providing leadership to children.
  • Trauma training certification or experience is desirable. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. 
  • Must be at least 21 years old. 
  • Ability to facilitate intercultural communication and create an inclusive environment. 
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, courtesy, and tact in dealing with the public and staff.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with extreme professionalism. 
  • Ability to plan and organize work, work under pressure, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work well as a team and independently with minimal direction.
  • Good knowledge of community resources as it relates to refugee youth.
  • Knowledge of CPR with knowledge of basic first aid is preferred.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to learn databases and other systems.
  • A current driver’s license is required. Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle and provide own transportation.
