Job Summary

Since its inception, our agency has maintained service provision to refugees and immigrants as a core component of our work. We provide resettlement services to refugees from around the world and the ongoing case management and employment services provided to them are also extended to asylees, immigrants granted Humanitarian Parole into the US, and foreign-born victims of human trafficking. For all these individuals and families, poverty and lack of access to adequate health care systems and medical services have harmed preventive healthcare and resulted in significant numbers of untreated health conditions. Additionally, these families are unfamiliar with US health services and require additional support in understanding and navigating the complex US healthcare system. They may require accompaniment to appointments or to the pharmacy and assistance in understanding health insurance and medical bills. Indeed, just the process of calling one’s PCP to schedule an appointment is a new learning experience.

Job Responsibilities

The AmeriCorps member will be responsible for client-facing services making sure each client has an identified PCP within their insurance group and has contact information on hand; providing individual/group tutoring and workshops on how to make appointments and explain cultural/interpretation needs, use prescription programs to reduce costs, and properly use over-the-counter medications; accompanying clients on appointments as needed, especially to dental clinics where multiple options of treatment are often presented and chosen, and conducting outreach in an effort to expand provider options and availability for this community. Within the framework outlined above, we encourage applicants to bring their own unique perspectives, experiences, and educational background to the role. We welcome creativity and new ideas to improve our health outreach. This position is a part of Catholic Charities USA’s Healthcare Outreach Program, a national intermediary project.
