Job Summary

POSITION SUMMARY: Public Relations and Communications Manager (CM) will provide leadership and strategic oversight for the Sanctuary’s communications, branding and marketing. Maximizing the organization’s objectives, the CM develops and coordinates external messaging and provides leadership and guidance to staff on aspects of internal communications and public relations. Reporting directly to the CEO, the CM works with directly with Creative Marketing Manager and Development Manager in creating, implementing, measuring, and evaluating the success of all messaging, marketing, and fundraising. CM supervises others as assigned.

 

Other duties include special projects as assigned.

Job Responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

:

  • In collaboration with the CEO and senior leadership, the CM develops all communications and messaging in support of The Sanctuary’s mission and philosophy
  • Develops and refines core messages to ensure organizational consistency
  • Ensures regular contact with target media, and appropriate response to media requests
  • Serves as point of contact for public information, oversees organizational response to inquiries, and serves as spokesperson as needed
  • Provides technical assistance and resources materials to assist internal teams in the formatting, marketing and positioning of their activities
  • Provides support, writes messages and coordinates communications during crisis and unplanned events
  • Serves as copywriter and editor for the organization’s website and all external communications, including but not limited to press releases, newsletters, brochures and website
    • Ensures new and consistent information is updated on a regular basis across programs and outreach
    • Monitors news and external events, with an eye toward issues of advocacy and support of organization’s mission

 

MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION

 

In collaboration with the CEO, Director of Finance, SM-ER, and the Creative Marketing, VIP and Development Managers, CM helps to develop and implement fundraising strategies to meet organization’s short and long-term fundraising goals and objectives.

 

  • Collaborates with CEO and board on future capital campaigns and special projects.
  • Assists CEO with creation of proposals and special support materials
  • Facilitates PR and Communications Program annual review and assessment
  • Provides PR and Communications Program quarterly goals and assessments
  • Assists with Board and Regulatory Agency reports as requested
  • Recommends long and short-term communications/organizational goals and objectives as needed
  • Keeps informed of developments in the fields of marketing, communications and public relations, not-for-profit management and governance, and elephant care and conservation work and uses this information to help the organization operate with initiative and innovation
  • Participates in Program Managers Meetings and other departmental meetings as requested
  • Collaborates with Directors and Senior Management in developing new programs including expanding organization’s sustainability practices
  • Works with CEO and Controller on program annual budget
  • Composes and distributes weekly internal team updates

Leads additional projects as assigned, such as, award applications and special events

Qualifications

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND PREREQUISITES:

  • Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in marketing and/or communications
  • Minimum five years prior work experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic understanding of Search Engine Optimization and website management
  • Experience with Google Analytics
  • Basic skill in Adobe Photoshop, Premier and/or InDesign
  • Working knowledge of email marketing platforms
  • Experience using Microsoft Office (Work, Excel, Outlook, etc)
  • Basic knowledge of photography/videography equipment
  • Needs assessment, messaging and campaign development, online outreach and materials development and distribution experience preferred
  • Must possess excellent public relations skills, interpersonal, communication and presentation skills which transcend diverse audiences
  • Demonstrated motivational and problem-solving capabilities with a high degree of integrity, ethics, and dedication to the mission
  • COVID – 19 Vaccination is Required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Primarily sedentary work.  Must be able to sit/stand for 8 hours.
  • Walking, bending, light lifting
