Organization Description

The Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (DMHSAS) is charged with planning for and promoting an array of services from prevention and early intervention to resiliency and recovery. The Department oversees four Regional Mental Health Institutes (RMHIs) and contracts with mental health and substance abuse community providers across the state to offer services to Tennesseans. The Department manages a budget of more than $380 million, with funding from dedicated fees, revenue, federal grants, and state general fund appropriations.

Western Mental Health Institute (WMHI) is Tennessee’s third largest State mental health hospital located in Bolivar Tennessee and has been serving 24 counties in West Tennessee since 1889. Hospitalizations are on a voluntary or involuntary basis, or patients can also be referred by the court system for pre-trial evaluations. The hospital offers 2 short-term care units, 4 long-term care units, and therapeutic treatment units for a total of 150 beds.

Job Responsibilities

Summary of Position

As a Psychologist in the Forensic Services Program, you will be responsible for:

  • Gathering information as needed about 301(a), 301(b), and 303(c) patients from outside sources to support the patient’s care team’s opinion on identified legal issues
  • Documenting and maintaining progress notes on all assigned patients within set timelines, in all appropriate charts
  • Determining if patients are stable enough to participate in psychological testing
  • Selecting and administering appropriate tests to address referral question
  • Accurately documenting test results and providing them to appropriate personnel
  • Creating, modifying, and monitoring individual behavior management plans for assigned patients

Qualifications

Education / Experience

Doctorate in psychology from an accredited university

Pre-employment criminal background check is required.
