A dynamic anti-poverty nonprofit organization with deep community roots, Martha O’Bryan Center (MOBC) serves low wealth families and children in Middle TN.  Our mission – We assist families rise above poverty in one generation.  Operating 10 sites in Nashville and working collaboratively across Middle TN, our headquarter services are in Nashville’s Cayce Place Homes. 

Recognized for building new service models that expand the “opportunity landscape” for families, working with MOBC means contributing to a culture of innovation, collaboration, and leadership.   Over 8,000 people are directly served annually across two program pathways – EDUCATION including early childhood, youth development, k-8 charter schools, high school Academic Student Unions, post-secondary support and FAMILTY ECONOMIC MOBILITY including parent empowerment, adult education and post-secondary services, career support, preschool care, food security, and family/crisis counseling.

POSITION SUMMARY

MOBC’s Academic Student Unions (ASUs) are a one-stop-shop for high school students to receive academic, social and emotional, work and career, and college prep assistance. ASUs operate all day, on-site at Stratford, Maplewood and Hunters Lane High Schools, running up to 7:00 PM in the evening, and are open to the whole school with no prerequisites, academically or economically.

Nashville students who participate in Martha O’Bryan Center Academic Student Unions are more likely to graduate high school, go to college or trade school, and then persist to their next year of college/trade school studies. Fostering a culture of educational success, ASUs provide a foundation of skills and supports for hundreds of high school seniors each year who go on to become first-generation college students.

The Program Coordinator provides overall supervision of part time staff and strategic direction for their assigned ASU, with four daily areas of focus: academics, work readiness, enrichment, and college prep. Additionally, this position is responsible for tracking student progress and building relationship with the leadership and faculty of their high school.

Job Responsibilities

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plans, develops, and oversees daily offerings in academics, work readiness, enrichment, and college prep.
  • Trains, and oversees the work of, tutors, volunteers, and AmeriCorps members.
  • Works with students, parents, and school staff to develop short-term steps in order to reach long-term goals.
  • Ensures all high school milestones are met and data entered, per grant requirements.
  • Meets regularly with high school faculty and teaching staff to ensure ASU’s materials and curriculum are aligned with high school’s lesson plans and Tennessee state standards.
  • Designs programs and develops partnerships in the community in order to offer a multitude of enrichment activities, including, but not limited to music, dance, art, technology, sports, health, and leadership; Integrates academics, service learning, and leadership and life skills as frequently as possible.
  • Coordinates with the Lead College and Career Coordinator to provide college prep services, including completing student action plans, family needs assessments, college visits, and ACT prep.
  • Provides interventions for all students not on pace to graduate.
  • Identifies, implements, and monitors health, safety, emergency, and compliance standards and procedures for ASU.

Qualifications

Our ideal candidate has:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Three years of experience working in a social service program.
  • Program leadership experience in a social service organization.
  • Ability to direct groups of youth in a variety of settings.
  • Ability to manage a large group of individuals with many dynamics and different priorities.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with internal and external constituents.
  • Ability to utilize data to improve and adapt programming.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills; strong time management skills.
  • Strong problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality regarding sensitive information.
