The Park Programs Volunteer Leader is the key link between Friends of Shelby Park and Bottoms and the community, matching volunteers’ interests and talents with park needs, getting people active and involved.

Position Description 

The Park Programs Volunteer Leader will get to explore the great outdoors and help maintain the park. A standout candidate will be a confident communicator with an interest in working with people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. The member will dig into leadership, program coordination, project management, and budgeting to execute volunteer opportunities that connect public spaces and community.

This member will organize volunteers to work on beautification and maintenance projects, help staff events, and lead programs in the community. Projects the member might tackle include trash pickups, flower planting, picnic shelter painting, stream restoration, and organizing skilled volunteers to talk with students or lead a public program.

This AmeriCorps member will leave their service term with skills in project management, outreach, budgeting, and relationship building. They will develop communication and data management skills, and a unique knowledge of nonprofit relationships with the local city government.

Job Responsibilities

Responsibilities 

• Coordinate, manage and supervise volunteer projects and event volunteers, including pre- and post-event communications, event prep, hospitality, oversight, and cleanup
• Recruit individual and group volunteers by building partnerships with schools, businesses and organizations in the community
• Maintain an organized and accurate volunteer database
• Develop ways to recognize and celebrate volunteers
• Create collateral for volunteer programs, including flyers, signage, social media, and sign-in sheets

• Assist with scheduling, planning, organizing, promoting, and facilitating activities and events at Shelby Park and Bottoms
• Research and propose opportunities for engaging the community at Shelby Park and Bottoms that align with organization’s mission and community outreach strategy

Typical Day In This Position 

A typical day might include time in the park assessing project needs or scoping out a specific upcoming project. Time inside the office may involve recruiting or coordinating volunteers, reserving tools and supplies, creating project budgets. The day might also include staffing a booth at a local neighborhood event or attending a neighborhood meeting to talk about the volunteer opportunities in the park.

Service Schedule 

Mon – Fri 8:30 am to 4:00 pm with time adjusted to serve a half-day every other Saturday.

Qualifications

Competencies  

Members should have experience with or the willingness to develop competencies in these areas:

(1) Serving people of all ages, including youth

(2) Working with people from diverse backgrounds

(3) Proficiency in using Microsoft Office tools like Word and Excel or ability to learn new computer skills quickly

Key abilities include:

(1) Good organizational skills, self motivation and enthusiasm for your work
(2) Willingness to work outdoors in cold, heat, and rain

Other Skills 

Experience with ARC Map or other mapping software preferred. Landscaping or construction experience preferred.
