Job Summary

The NMAAM OURstory Education Internship program is dedicated to serving and providing access/training to collegiate students of color, particularly those attending Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs), to explore career pathways in the areas of non-profit management and museum management through the lens of arts, culture, and music.

Through the provision of professional development and networking opportunities, the program is dedicated to advocating for the expansion of interest, access, and knowledge of the museum and nonprofit professions to develop emerging leaders of color that will utilize their training to explore their own leadership focus and utilize it to create spaces for meaningful dialogue and discussion.

NMAAM is seeking a total of four (4) interns – two for the month of June and two for the month of July – who will spend 12 to 15 hours per week for the four-week term of the internship. Interns will receive a stipend of $750 for the four-week assignment.

Job Responsibilities

Over the course of the program, interns will:

• Increase their knowledge of the social, economic, and cultural influence of African American music in American history.
• Increase their awareness of the role fundraising, program development, and marketing play in developing learning opportunities for diverse groups; particularly those who are considered economically disadvantaged.
• Expand their creative and analytical thinking skills through a focus on conceptualizing and developing educational content across various grade levels.
• Gain an understanding of NMAAM history, organizational structure, how decisions are made, funders, and organizational accountability.
• Develop career goals under tutelage of professional staff. 
• Gain knowledge and experience of working as a Museum/Nonprofit professional. – Gain tangible public history skills that relate to their classroom experience and help students prepare for their career. 
• Be able to craft a final project that utilizes all of the skills/information they have obtained while collaborating with various departments.

Qualifications

The internship is limited to current college or universtiy students preferably enrolled in an HBCU.
