Job Summary

Legal Aid Society’s mission is to advance, defend, and enforce the legal rights of low-income and vulnerable people in order to secure for them the basic necessities of life. Our staff includes national authorities in the fields of domestic violence, housing, consumer law, federal income taxation, health advocacy, non-profit group representation, social security, and special education.

Job Responsibilities

The Volunteer Lawyers Program (VLP) Legal Assistant supports the activities of pro bono case handlers by performing clerical and administrative duties, including transcribing, drafting, and typing legal documents and correspondence. The Legal Assistant also answers and makes telephone calls, completes data entry, performs case file maintenance, scans documents, provides case management assistance, meets with clients, maintains records, provides dictation support, and conducts intake as needed.

This role may accompany and provide support to VLP unit Project Coordinator at legal clinics. After hours work may be required. This position is funded in part by, and in collaboration with, one or more grants. Personnel must adhere to goals and outcomes detailed in the grant contract. This position is funded for the duration of the grant and subsequent renewal may result in the modification of job duties and responsibilities.

Qualifications

  • Must have a High School diploma or GED, but Associate degree preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years experience working in a law office, court, social service or other relevant setting.
  • Strong typing and computer skills.
  • Must be able to follow directions and work with a team and independently.
  • Proficiency in Spanish a plus.
  • Team player.
  • Must be a self-starter with an ability to multi-task and complete projects timely.
  • Must be detail-oriented and have great organizational skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, etc.) and Legal Files database preferred.
  • Ability to relate to the needs of people of diverse backgrounds
