Job Summary

Background: The Tennessee Conference of the United Methodist Church and the Memphis Conference of the United Methodist Church will form the new Tennessee-Western Kentucky Conference of the United Methodist Church on January 1, 2022.  This new position will support the Equip Strategy Team of the new conference structure.  We are looking to fill this position by October 1, 2021.  The conference’s mission is to discover, equip, connect, and send lay and clergy leaders who shape congregations that offer Christ to a hurting world, one neighborhood at a time.

Summary of the position: The Ministry Associate-Equip position supports, through adaptive leadership skills and collaborative ministry, the work of the Tennessee-Western Kentucky Conference in realizing the vision of the Equip Strategy team. This position will resource and support a cohesive strategy of leadership development for the policies, practices and processes for the Equip Strategy Team including but not limited to the Board of Laity, the Board of Ordained Ministry, the Board of Higher Ed and Campus Ministry, the camping ministry, age-level ministry and the other teams associated with Equip.  The role of the position is strategic, relational, connectional, and collaborative in nature.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Assist and support the Equip Strategy Team in accomplishing and fulfilling the mission of the Tennessee-Western Kentucky Conference.
  1. Assist and support the Equip Strategy team in creating a culture of call and implementing systems and processes to assist in answering the call for lay and clergy. 
  2. Serves and resources the Equip Strategy Team.  The Equip Strategy Team relates to several ministry programs including:
  • Safe Spaces
  • Intentional Discipleship
  • Disability Concerns
  • Camp and Retreat
  • Campus Ministry (rotating representative)
  • Higher Ed
  • Children/Youth
  • Missional Innovation (Turner Center)
  • Board of Ministry
  • Board of Laity
  • Certified Lay Ministry
  • Spiritual Leadership Formation and Development
  • Certified Lay Servant
  1. Have a comfort with innovation that empowers the leaders of the Equip Strategy team.
  1. Ability to communicate and implement the policies and procedures set by The Book of Discipline.
  1. Ability to communicate and implement the policies and procedures set by the Board of Ordained Ministry and the Board of Laity.
  1. Provide a connection with the General Church and provide interpretation of denominational processes as it relates to the Equip Ministry Team.
  1. Develop a culture of hospitality and consistency for all processes associated with lay and clergy leadership development.
  1. Participates in ongoing professional development and integrates emerging new learning tools and processes.
  1. Be financially accountable for the ministries for which you are responsible in collaboration with the Connectional Ministry Officer.
  1. Embrace the diversity and inclusion goals of the Conference.

Physical Requirements: 

They will frequently communicate with the public and others on business related questions.  Must occasionally lift or move office supplies or other items weighing up to 25 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, they will be in an office environment and will need to occasionally move about insdie the office to access file cabinets, office machinery etc.  Minimal travel to other conference locations in Middle or West Tn and Western KY may be required.  Ability to work from home or in the office in a hybrd/remote work setting.

  • Strategic Planning:  Think critically and creatively about direction needed to support the goals and work of the Equip Strategy Team in a constantly changing context.  Demonstrate a capacity for understanding and being able to strategically use data and information for self-assessment, accountability and learning in the interests of promoting and communicating transformation.
  • Leadership skills:  Proactive leader who can ensure the consistency of processes.
  • Process Management: Adapt processes necessary to effectively and efficiently accomplish the work, in support of the Equip Strategy Team.
  • Problem Solving: Adaptive thinker who can effectively focus the team and its leaders on missional and critical issues to accomplish the strategy.
  • Communication skills: Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills. Speak and write clearly and succinctly; clearly deliver message in a tone appropriate to the context. Ability to speak in a public forum.
  • Interpersonal Skills:  Capacity to work collegially and develop rapport with a wide diverse, variety of individuals.
  • Helping Orientation: Demonstrate concern for, attend to the needs of, provide resources for the work of the Equip Strategy Team and ensure consistency throughout the processes associated with all lay and clergy leadership development. 
  • Organizational skills: Ability to plan, develop, and coordinate multiple tasks and projects.  Ability to organize resources and establish priorities.
  • Faith: Evidence of intentional discipleship and faith in Jesus Christ.
  • Church polity: Knowledge of General, Jurisdictional and Annual Conference Church polity.
  • Mission Mindset: Committed to the mission and ministry of the United Methodist Church; commitment to the mission, vision, and values of the TWK Conference; United Methodist background preferred. Ability to articulate the meaning of connectionalism of the United Methodist Church.
  • Confidentiality: Ability to discern when information received may be confidential or to what level such should be shared

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Master of Divinity (or its equivalent) is preferred but other Master’s degrees and/or years of experience may be considered.
  • Full-time
  • Must be able to work remotely or in the office with some area travel and team meetings.
