Job Summary

The Managing Attorney will work with TIRRC’s growing Legal Services department to increase the availability of low cost immigration and civil legal services across the state through providing direct immigration representation, increasing collaboration with other legal service providers in Tennessee, assisting with a community-based navigator program, and providing community education. The TIRRC Legal Services department aims to support TIRRC’s campaigns and prioritize leadership development, community empowerment, and base-building / power-building.

Job Responsibilities

Legal Services Responsibilities

  • Provide direct representation to clients in affirmative immigration applications, prioritizing DACA and citizenship.
  • Support the organization’s ongoing education priorities through creating legally-accurate content and training to distribute to affected communities.
  • Collaborate with the Organizing Team to support the Legal Navigators program. This includes:
    • Providing training and legal guidance to navigators and program coordinator;
    • Representing or referring clients who “graduate” from the program; and
    • Reviewing navigator work product for quality control and accuracy.
  • Participate in regular calls with state- and nation-wide partners to build a network of shared resources and best practices in the changing legal and logistical landscape.
  • Utilize evaluation tools to measure and reflect on the success of the program’s efforts.

Supervision & Management

  • Serve as the head of the Legal Services Team at TIRRC
  • Provide consistent support for two to four non-attorney supervisees including weekly check-in’s and managing schedules
  • Invest in the legal knowledge and expertise of all TIRRC staff.
  • Supervise legal interns to supplement direct representation and increase the capacity of the legal team and provide a robust educational experience for participants.
    • Maintain relationships with law schools to bolster the quality of the internship program

Organizational Support 

  • Represent TIRRC at community events, to the media, and to other organizations as needed. 
  • Ensure all data is maintained in a confidential and secure manner in the case management system.
  • Provide regular updates to TIRRC on case numbers, availability of services, and other relevant information. 
  • Participate in major organizational events as needed.

Qualifications

  • Belief in TIRRC’s mission and experience with social justice.
  • J.D. and admission to practice law in some jurisdiction is required. Tennessee bar admission preferred. 
  • Experience providing direct legal services and/or immigration law is preferred. 
  • Ability to work on deadline with little supervision; be very organized and juggle multiple priorities.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative setting and to communicate sensitively and effectively with clients, staff and volunteers with diverse personalities, lifestyles, cultures, and faiths.
  • English and Spanish fluency preferred. 
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends and travel statewide.
