Job Responsibilities
Engages in and drives impact litigation and systemic advocacy work in both government and private sectors, offering guidance on which legal issues are selected for litigation and/or systemic advocacy
Provides oversight of the agency’s legal advocacy work through supervision of attorneys, collaboration with the agency management team, and professional interaction with other staff members
Leads the legal department through training, coaching or developing legal staff, conducts performance reviews, and assists with professional development for legal team members
Advises the agency on legal decisions and contracts
Collaborates with the Program & Quality Director to ensure the agency is on mission and meeting grant requirements and assists in quality monitoring of agency programs
Assists in recruitment and hiring of legal team members
Participates in local, state, and national councils, boards, committees etc. and collaborates with agencies to address identified program issues and concerns
Assists Public Policy Advisor as needed with providing recommendations to applicable state departments, facilities, and state or federal entities
Collaborates with the Community Relations Team as needed to develop content for newsletter articles, social media, annual reports, and other publications or electronic media
Performs related tasks as may be assigned by the Executive Director
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school or other law school approved by Tennessee Supreme Court
Active Tennessee law license
A minimum of 5 calendar years of experience handling litigation including multiparty or class litigation, preferably related to disability and/or other civil right
Strong preference for applicants who have practiced law at a Protection & Advocacy agency
Skills and Abilities:
Sound professional judgment and excellent critical thinking skills
Oral and written communication competency with attention to detail
Strong leadership skills and understanding of human resource management
Exceptional time management and organizational skills
Ability to travel as needed
Computer proficiency and ability to easily integrate new technology into work environment
Ability to facilitate communication within teams and participate effectively as team member
Demonstrated commitment to the mission of DRT through professional demonstration
