Job Summary

Consistent with the Christian mission and vision of the YMCA of Middle Tennessee, and in cooperation with other YMCA staff, under the direction of the Equestrian Director, the year-round Equestrian Coordinator is responsible for the supervision, control, organization, and scheduling of Equestrian Programs and supporting services at YMCA Camp Widjiwagan areas.  S/he will be responsible for the maintenance of the barn, tack, and herd.

Job Responsibilities

  •  Model the YMCA core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility
  • Organize, plan, schedule, and coordinate equestrian programming, including year-round lessons
  • Create, implement, and grow Equestrian programs including, but not limited to, summer camp, family, teen, and parent/child programs producing new revenue streams
  • Communicate with participants and parents of youth participants
  • Maintain positive relationships with YMCA staff, guests, and camp participants
  • Be alert to program safety factors and potential hazards; prevent accidents and minimize or eliminate hazardous situations; report any problems or hazards to the Equestrian Director or Executive Director
  • Ensure the safety of all youth and guests at all times while meeting the individual needs of the participants in a fun environment
  • Ensure all equestrian staff facilitate activities, trail rides, and riding lessons effectively and safely
  • Follow all rules and safety regulations as set forth by the YMCA, ACA, and CHA
  • Lead and/or assist in trail rides ensuring timely departure and arrival as well as all participants and staff follow safety regulations
  • Oversee and support Equestrian Staff in seeking opportunities to build on program potential, while maintaining high-quality operations
  • Assist Equestrian Director to recruit, hire, train, develop, schedule, and supervise staff
  • Champion equestrian staff’s personal growth within the YMCA and commitment to Camp Widjiwagan by developing and executing staff training for summer and seasonal staff
  • Coordinate weekly schedules, staff assignments, program area set-ups, meal times, and logistics to support program enrollment
  • Ensure the barns, pens, arenas, and pastures are clean and safe for both guests and animals
  • Manage and participate in the cleanliness, efficiency, and safety of the barn and overall care of the horses, farm, and petting zoo animals, including daily cleaning, grooming, feeding, and watering
  • Communicate any injuries or abnormalities with the herd and/or farm animals
  • Take part in mid-summer and post-summer evaluations with the Equestrian Director
  • Work with the Equestrian Director to construct and manage measurable fiscal responsibilities including budget and payroll.

Superior supervisory skills and an enthusiastic personality with the ability to inspire and motivate staff, volunteers, members, and participants to create a culture of outstanding service.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community

  • Must be highly organized with the ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Minimum 18 years of age; high school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum two years experience instructing horseback-riding lessons required
  • Experience with equestrian or herd care required
  • Experience supervising staff is preferred
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends year-round, with the possibility of some overnight. **Resident Camp runs from Sunday PM-Saturday PM during the summer season

Certifications Required:

  • Before the start of 1st shift: New Hire Orientation training
  • Within 30 days of hire: CPR Pro/ First Aid/ AED
  • CHA certification is required within 6 months
