Job Summary
The Human Resources Generalist manages the daily operations of the HR department, which includes recruitment, compensation and benefits administration, payroll, leave management, and ensuring compliance with Nashville CARES policies and legal requirements. This role is key to maintaining a positive work environment and ensuring that employees are paid accurately and on time.
Job Responsibilities
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Compliance & Training:
- Track and document compliance with mandatory and optional training, continuing education, and assessments (such as safety, anti-harassment, and professional certification).
- Maintain records of licensure and certifications.
Hiring & Onboarding:
- Collaborate with department managers to recruit and hire qualified candidates.
- Manage background checks, employee eligibility verifications, and onboarding processes, including orientation and employee recognition programs.
HR Program Management:
- Administer human resource programs, including compensation, benefits, leave, and recognition programs.
- Address employee relations issues such as performance management, disciplinary actions, and investigations.
- Oversee health and safety compliance, as well as training and development initiatives.
Payroll Administration:
- Process payroll on a regular basis, ensuring accuracy in employee pay, tax withholdings, and benefit deductions.
- Handle payroll discrepancies and resolve issues related to time tracking, overtime, and payroll taxes.
- Collaborate with the finance team to ensure payroll data is accurate and up to date.
- Maintain payroll records and ensure compliance with relevant federal, state, and local wage laws.
Employee Support
- Act as the main point of contact for employee inquiries regarding compensation, benefits, and HR policies.
- Refer complex issues to senior HR staff or external advisors when necessary.
- Participate in disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations as required.
Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure the organization is compliant with federal, state, and local labor laws and regulations.
- Regularly review and update HR policies to reflect changes in laws and industry best practices.
- Stay informed on trends and developments in HR, talent management, and employment law.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Perform other duties as assigned by the CEO or HR leadership.
Qualifications
Skills & Qualifications:
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written).
- Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict-resolution skills.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
- Effective time management and ability to meet payroll deadlines.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Integrity, professionalism, and ability to handle confidential payroll and HR matters.
- Thorough knowledge of employment laws, regulations, and payroll procedures.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and payroll software such as Paylocity.
- Familiarity with HRIS and talent management systems.
Education and Experience:
- A bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field is required.
- A minimum of 8 years of experience as an HR Generalist, with at least 3 years of payroll processing experience.
- SHRM-CP or payroll certification (CPP) is a plus.
