Job Summary

Nashville CARES is seeking an engaging HIV Counseling & Testing Specialist who will be responsible for HIV counseling, testing and screening activities at various locations focusing on men who have sex with men (MSM) and African American MSM (AAMSM).  This position works closely with Prevention Education and other departments to promote, cultivate and encourage community HIV testing and behavioral change.  This position also works in collaboration with others in the agency to ensure seamless linkage to care for People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). 

Job Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Plan, coordinate and conduct HIV Counseling and Testing Services and work as a supportive team member to achieve overall goals. 
  • Work alongside program and clinic staff to identify new and innovative ways to reach, educate and test individuals. 
  • Deliver Social Network Strategy intervention to improve counseling and testing services through exploration and identification of testing participants and volunteer social networks.
  • Increase knowledge and awareness around HIV and PrEP/PEP and increase access to testing, health navigation, medical care, and support services
  • Work proactively, independently and as a team with other staff, to offer individualized care and support.
  • Work with program coordinators to use surveillance data and data systems to improve counseling and testing delivery as well as subsequent care and prevention services.
  • Increase HIV testing, linkage, retention, and re-engagement with HIV care, treatment, and prevention
  • Enhance client navigation of services at all stages of care, including pre-diagnosis, linkage, retention, and re-engagement with HIV specialty care, treatment, prevention, and psychosocial services (substance abuse and mental health treatment), housing and employment assistance, and other social services.
  • Document activities while adhering to intervention and safety protocols with output and outcome assessment of activities.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation of all services provided consistent with department and agency standards.   
  • Assist staff in addressing social and structural factors directly affecting HIV testing, linkage to, retention in, and re-engagement with care, treatment, and prevention.
  • Assist with the recruitment, training, coordination and retention of volunteers.
  • Develop innovative materials, campaigns, and media to educate on high-risk behaviors with the goal of increasing counseling and testing participation. 

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent experience.
  • Strong written, oral communication, public speaking and marketing skills
  • Understanding of social determinants of health and their impact on an individual’s ability to engage in and maintain health care resources.
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to utilize an electronic client record.
  • Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to maintain an objective and compassionate attitude in dealing with varying types of situations and personalities.
  • Ability to work 40 hours a week with some evenings, holiday and weekend work.
  • Valid driver’s license, clean DMV record, reliable transportation and automobile insurance.

Preferred Qualifications:   

  •   Bachelor’s degree.
  •   Personal history as consumer of services for Gay Male/MSM populations.
  •   Experience with and knowledge of HIV/AIDS, and the LGBTQ community.
  •    Verbal and written fluency in Spanish and English.
