Job Summary

Job Summary:  The Gift Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing the Frist art Museum’s entire retail operation. This position serves as the shop’s supervising buyer, product design developer, merchandise coordinator responsible for merchandising the store and work closely with the marketing team to develop retail marketing strategies to support the institution’s mission and vision.

This position oversees all Gift Shop Associates and shop volunteers ensuring the operation is working to meet the needs and desires of the museum and provides a pleasing complement to the exhibitions, programs, and activities of the museum.

The Frist’s retail operation was created as an aesthetic complement to the Frist Art Museum and maintains a high and consistent level of expertise in its operation.  The primary purpose of the gift shop is to produce revenue to support for the Frist’s programs and activities and enhance the experience of visiting the Frist Art Museum.

Job Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this classification. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.   Other duties may be required and assigned.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Conceptualize, create, and design the Frist Art Museum’s Gift Shop operations;
  • Coordinate with Finance to determine the shop’s purchasing budget and sales goals (based on attendance projections) to fulfill the large demands of the store in the development of and maintenance of sufficient inventory to support and sustain the shop;
  • Create quarterly sales goals based on projected attendance;
  • Create monthly and quarterly sales reports to measure progress toward sales goals;
  • Create a goal-oriented atmosphere that motivates associates to contribute to the success of the shop;
  • Work to ensure a significant profit-to-sales ratio to maintain a healthy gross margin to ensure a profitable operation;
  • Work with the Finance Department to ensure proper inventory management including the efficient taking of annual inventory;
  • Supervise receiving activities and oversee orderly storage of inventory;
  • Ensure inventory includes merchandise to appeal to the museum’s diverse audience;
  • Work with museum colleagues to procure and (or develop exhibition-related merchandise when practical) to complement the museum’s exhibition schedule;
  • Plan, prepare for and conduct annual shop inventory in concert with Finance Department;
  • Work with museum’s marketing staff to create sales and other marketing programs to support shop sales, including sales of museum memberships;
  • Work with select departments to develop and/or order special gifts and/or promotional items when needed;
  • Supervise shop associates to work ensure they work respectfully and appreciatively with volunteers and provide excellent customer service to museum guests;
  • Procure appropriate packaging and wrapping;
  • Ensure the Gift Shop maintains a beautiful, engaging presence with cases, feature wall and window displays well designed and maintained;
  • Maintain keen familiarity with upcoming exhibitions and their content to make artful connections and ensure shop offerings complement the art in the galleries.
  • Ensure all merchandise orders are made with special attention made to stocking exhibition-related merchandise to support current exhibitions and promote upcoming exhibitions;

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:  College degree or high school diploma with 5-6 years of retail management experience.  Museum retail background strongly preferred.  Knowledge of fine and visual arts a significant plus.  Speaking a foreign language a plus.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience in retail environment(s) with knowledge of all aspects of retail operations;
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including select evenings and weekends as may be needed or required;
  • Experience in meeting retail revenue goals and individual job goals;
  • Knowledge of e-commerce;
  • Ability to assess product relevance as relates to museum exhibitions, architecture, and environment;
  • The skill to communicate clearly and effectively;
  • Ability to work well and have positive exchange with customers, shop staff, volunteers, and museum colleagues;
  • Enjoy hard work and challenge;
  • Creativity, flexibility, and adaptability in thought and action;
  • Physical and mental endurance;
  • Multi-task oriented and willing to do whatever the retail day demands;
  • Maintain calm demeanor in all situations;
  • Ability and desire to stay informed of the Frist’s exhibitions and activities;
  • Ability to  manage and motivate Gift Shop associates to create a collaborative, supportive environment;
  • Ability to help create a positive, aesthetically pleasing, energetic environment for all visitors to the Frist Art Museum gift shop.
