Job Summary
The Financial Counselor contributes to the efforts of United Way of Greater Nashville (UWGN) by providing high-quality, one-on-one financial counseling to individuals in the community through the Financial Empowerment Center (FEC). This position is responsible for giving clients the tools to experience financial freedom, empowerment, and security, aligning with UWGN’s mission to unite the community and mobilize resources so that every child, individual, and family thrives.
Job Responsibilities
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Conducts one-on-one financial counseling sessions to empower individuals to manage income and expenses, navigate a complex system, and achieve their financial goals
- Documents and follows up with counseling sessions to track and further individual client progress as well as demonstrate FEC program success through compelling, complete data
- Builds rapport with clients to cultivate trust and engagement in counseling sessions
- Research financial products and services that affect clients; utilize and contribute to the team’s experience and knowledge base for the benefit of all clients and counselors
- Communicates with third parties including collection agencies, lawyers, and lenders on behalf of clients to verify or resolve billing or collection errors, disputes, and negotiations and teach the client this skill for future use
- Builds peer relationships within the FEC network and the general community to ensure strong, reciprocal referrals, as many clients have needs that fall outside of FEC scope
- Trains with Senior Financial Counselors on both financial content and internal processes prior to seeing clients and works with assigned mentors over the course of their first year to ensure a solid foundation for counseling practice and program integrity
- Participates in ongoing professional development, including Advanced VITA certification
- Demonstrates patience and persistence in supporting clients experiencing financial crises in a constantly shifting and uncertain situation, particularly those accessing social services for the first time.
Qualifications
Education: Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in social work, business, finance, or related field; or 3 years relevant experience
Qualifications:
- Financial Counseling Certification training must be completed and CFE Fund exams passed within 3 months of hire. Official certification must be obtained through the training organization within 1 year of hire.
- Preferred: Financial counseling
- Professional experience including one or more of the following: banking, social work, financial services, homeownership education, credit counseling, coaching/counseling
- Budget creation and management
- Working with diverse populations
- Financial services and management
- Credit Bureau Reporting System
- Ability to relate to people of varied economic, racial, ethnic & religious backgrounds
- Navigation of complex financial topics
- Goal setting
- Written, oral, and technological communication
- Negotiation
- Research
- Navigating community resources
- Ability to multi-task
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, especially Outlook, Word, and Excel
- Preferred: A valid Driver’s License & proof of insurance
- Preferred: Bilingual
Physical Demands: Visual acuity, manual dexterity, hearing, driving, standing, walking, sitting, stooping, bending, lifting, and carrying 50 pounds. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform their essential duties.
Working Conditions Physical Demands:
- Is required to work nights and some Saturdays according to the schedule set by the manager and the needs of the community.
- Requires the employee to work externally in the community. This may require traveling to various locations throughout the day for counseling or outreach based on schedule.
- Minimum of 37.5 hours per week. Based on campaign schedules, a position often requires work beyond traditional hours
- Well-lighted, heated, and/or air-conditioned indoor office setting with adequate ventilation.
