Plans, develops manages, and controls the day-to-day operations of the accounting, finance, and personnel for the assigned region and Area Command; serves as liaison and financial advisor to the assigned regions, to the Area Command, Advisory Boards, and Divisional Headquarters, by reporting the financial status and researching financial discrepancies. Directs the Great Plains Accounting Program for an assigned region by using a functionalized double-entry accounting package. Ensure overall supervision and review of accounting records, ledgers and statements for accuracy and completeness. Manages Accountants responsible for performing double-entry accounting work necessary to prepare and maintain an assigned region’s chart of accounts, journals, fiscal closing statements, bank accounts, general ledger, asset management and depreciation, etc
. Ensures the accuracy, completeness, timelines, and integrity of all financial reporting. Provides extensive analysis of Command’s business goals and determines what factors will contribute to or impede the ability to obtain those goals. Research grant opportunities with an ability to write grants independently and in conjunction with Program Managers. Assists the Commanding Officer with special projects as well as work with the Advisory Board; attends and participates in various community organizations and agencies in order to increase awareness of The Salvation Army programs and services and serves as guest speaker for the same.
Knowledge of The Salvation Army mission, philosophy, culture, protocol, and organizational structure. Knowledge of accepted principles, methods, and practices of computerized double-entry fund accounting as well as finance, budgeting, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Knowledge of Lotus 123, Excel, Word and accounting software in general. Knowledge of the principles and practices of general business administration, supervision, and management. Ability to evaluate the organizations accounting and financial functions, respond to deficiencies by identifying and implementing appropriate corrective actions, develop and administer sound policies, procedures, and budgets. Ability to effectively supervise and evaluate the quality of work performed by Accountant staff and to provide effective and timely direction and assistance to ensure compliance with established procedures, accepted practices, and quality standards. Ability to integrate and interpret data from various sources and to plan, develop, and implement responsible strategies. Ability to scrutinize financial reports and documents in order to ensure integrity, accuracy, and completeness. Ability to make sound, logical interpretations of established guidelines and regulations quickly. Ability to apply discretion and independent judgment when processing, analyzing and resolving routine accounting transactions and reporting in accordance with accepted accounting principles. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing in an effective and professional manner. Ability to maintain confidentiality of financial records. Ability to discharge the duties and responsibilities of this position consistent with the principles, standards, and the Orders and Regulations of The Salvation Army. Ability to organize, lead, develop and maintain an effective and professional working relationship with all Finance Department Personnel, Salvation Army officers and employees, and professionals in the community. Ability to conduct the affairs of this office responsibly, efficiently, and economically. Ability to conduct and lead group presentations. Possess knowledge of efficient methods of organizing, maintaining, and securing financial records. Ability to maintain the confidentiality of all information associated with the job.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Business Administration or a related field, a master’s preferred and 6 years progressively responsible experience performing double-entry computerized accounting work with Great Plains accounting experience preferred and 3 years’ experience supervising subordinate accounting staff, or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
