Job Responsibilities

You will love this role if you are interested in joining a caring, supportive team who values one another and works to see all children Tennessee thriving in safe, stable, and nurturing families and communities.  We value hope and commitment to the children and families we serve. This AmeriCorps member should feel confident with their public speaking skills, as this role will lead outreach efforts in zip codes and communities not currently served. Additionally, the member will create and organize effective curriculum using evidence-based practices, to be deliverable in a variety of methods, including small and large groups, and varying in duration and scope depending on community needs.

Nurture the Next provides education across the state to share ways that everyone in the community can support strong families and keep children safe, and it advocates for evidence-based family support programs, like home visiting. Home-based services build trusting relationships with families and utilize these connections to support families in identifying strengths and barriers, accessing resources, and obtaining the knowledge and skills to achieve their goals.  NTN’s domestic violence programming bolsters the effectiveness of its partner organizations for the best support to victims and survivors of domestic violence.

This member will have the opportunity to become trained and certified to provide support to families and children that have experienced domestic abuse through evidence based models. This service term will allow the member to build skills in nonprofit leadership, facilitation of group and individual interventions, evaluation, project management, curriculum development and outreach.

The HON AmeriCorps Program is made possible through generous support from Volunteer Tennessee, The Dan and Margaret Maddox Fund, and AmeriCorps, the federal agency connecting individuals and organizations through service and volunteering to tackle the nation’s most pressing challenges.

  • Assess and triage families into programming through group and home visits.
  • Participate and facilitate community outreach in underserved zipcodes to recruit and enroll families in the Nurturing Parenting program and Healthy Families TN.
  • Organize and develop effective curriculum that can be provided to large and small groups through a variety of mediums.
  • Utilize best practices to create and deliver curriculum that serves the needs of children that have been exposed to violence in their homes and the residual trauma.
  • Recruit volunteers, provide training, and support retention.
  • Strengthen partnerships with Department of Child Services and shelters across the state
  • Assist in internal communications to improve team relationships and outcomes related to the programs.

Typical Day In This Position 

This AmeriCorps member may start their day with training to stay up to date on the latest intervention methods, then jump into research for curriculum. There will be significant time spent interfacing with families, both in person and by phone. No two days are the same – time is spent both in team environments and individually tackling service projects.




Members should have experience with or the willingness to develop competencies in these areas:

  1. Providing supportive services to young children and families
  1. Learning material related to service delivery and integrating into teaching/coaching, with an openness to reflective practice.
  1. Self-directing daily tasks and practicing effective time management
  1. Proficiency in Microsoft office, email, and internet usage

Key abilities include:  

  1. Establishing trusting relationships and utilizing basic supportive skills
  1. Approaching families from a strengths-based and family-centered service model (training provided)
  1. Maintaining professional boundaries while providing supportive services
  1. Awareness of the particular needs of low-income and/or multi-stressed families
  1. Strong written and verbal communication skills
  1. Ability to collaborate as part of a team

Prerequisites: Bachelor’s Degree

Physical Requirements: Lift and carry up to 20-30lbs; Responsibilities in the position may entail sitting for extended periods of time; Responsibilities in this position may entail standing for extended periods of time; Office or service environment may include noisy environments

Required Driver’s License: Yes

Additional Information


  • $20,000 living allowance, paid in bi-weekly increments
  • $6,495 education award, upon completion of service contract
