Job Summary

Legal Aid Society has an opening for an attorney in its Nashville Office. This attorney will provide legal representation to eligible clients in civil cases, seeking safety and independence.  Primary clientele includes low-income victims of domestic violence and sexual assault seeking orders of protection, divorce or immigration status as a result of their victimization.  As a part of a holistic approach, representation may include varying areas of law as needed to ensure the health and safety of the victim, administrative advocacy, litigation in state and federal courts, and community education for clients in accordance with program guidelines and priorities and the Code of Professional Responsibility. 

This position is funded in part by, and in collaboration with,  one or more grants and personnel must adhere to goals and outcomes detailed in the grant contract. This position will continue to be funded as long as the grant is renewed. Subsequent renewal may result in modification of job duties and responsibilities.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provides high quality legal representation to individuals in accordance with the Rules of Professional Conduct.
  • Provides counseling, advice and other brief services and referrals, as appropriate.
  • Participates in firm-wide practice groups.
  • Compliance with all applicable organizational, professional, and legal requirements for confidentiality.
  • Reviews and supervises the work of support staff members done on behalf of the attorney’s clients and clients assigned to support staff.
  • Participates in the firm’s community education program, by being available to speak with community groups and agency staff, suggesting ideas for and helping to prepare and update community education materials.
  • Becomes familiar with and complies with program policies and regulations of the Legal Services Corporation and other funders.
  • Becomes familiar with and complies with relevant portions of the Legal Services Corporation’s Performance Criteria and with the American Bar Association’s Standards for the Provision of Civil Legal Aid.
  • Works with members of the private bar and with LAS’s Volunteer Lawyer Program to promote private bar involvement.
  • Participates on internal committees, work groups, and other efforts to promote and improve LAS’s operations.
  • Establishes and maintains professional working relationships with office staff.
  • Performs such other duties as may be reasonably requested.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the Executive Director, Managing Attorney, or supervisor.
  • Compliance with program policies and regulations of the Legal Services Corporation and other funders.
  • Compliance with all applicable organizational, professional, and legal requirements for confidentiality.

Qualifications

Qualifications: 

  • Law school graduate or graduating May 2020.   
  • Admitted to practice in Tennessee or willing to take first available bar examination. 
  • Demonstrated interest in public interest work, family law, issues unique to victims of domestic violence and the problems of disadvantaged communities 
  • Has substantive experience required for work under a specific funding source or in a specialized unit. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.  Excellent interpersonal skills. 
  • Experienced in public speaking and training others on the law. 
  • Good organizational skills. 
  • Strong typing and computer skills. Experience with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc), Legal Files database, Westlaw, and Accurint preferred.    Must have driver’s license and access to transportation. 
  • Fluency in written and spoken Spanish a plus.
