Job Summary

We are seeking to hire two Paralegals for our Eviction Right to Counsel Project in Nashville. The Eviction Right to Counsel Project is a new, 2-year grant funded project wherein low- and moderate-income tenants facing eviction will be appointed legal representation to ensure equity and inclusion in the legal system. The Eviction Right to Counsel Paralegal will work with eligible clients, along with two Housing attorneys. Duties include, but are not limited to, serving income-eligible clients in cases involving tenants’ rights (public/subsidized housing, Section 8, private landlord/tenant, and fair housing). Accompany attorneys to court, assist with trial preparation, draft legal documents, research preliminary issues, and conduct client intake and interviews. This position is funded in part by, and in collaboration with, one or more grants. This position is funded for the duration of the grant and subsequent renewal may result in modification of job duties and responsibilities.

Job Responsibilities

  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including practice interviewing clients and helping people in crisis.
  • Strong typing and computer skills.
  • Must be a self-starter with an ability to multi-task and complete projects timely.
  • Must be detail-oriented and have great organizational skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, etc.) and Legal Files database preferred.
  • Bilingual a plus.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the principle of equal justice and to advocacy for low-income persons.
  • Treat clients, staff, and the public with dignity and respect.
  • Appreciate the experiences and needs of people from diverse economic, social, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate a personal sense of integrity.
  • Take ownership of projects and produce solid work product.
  • Work as a member of a team and independently, including willingness to help others (cooperative) and share knowledge, information, contacts, and experience.
  • Address issues in a timely manner.

Qualifications

  • Minimum High School diploma or GED. Associates degree or Paralegal certificate preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years prior experience working in a law office, court, social service agency, or other relevant setting
