Job Summary

The Environmental Outreach and Communication Coordinator (Coordinator) participates in a year-long term of AmeriCorps service (1,700 hours) supporting Harpeth Conservancy (HC), a science-based conservation organization working to restore and protect clean water and healthy ecosystems for rivers in Tennessee.  

The Coordinator leads HC’s efforts to increase community involvement and public awareness through educational events, creative marketing/social media campaigns involving key stakeholders, and expanded outreach opportunities with established festivals/events. The Coordinator — who should be a capable swimmer and comfortable in a canoe/kayak — will regularly meet new people and create engaging communication efforts to reach the rapidly growing number of tourists and residents in Middle Tennessee. 

The Coordinator serves as part of a 23-person cohort of civic-minded individuals who receive skills training, professional development, and networking opportunities through a partnership between HC and the Hands On Nashville (HON) AmeriCorps Program.

Job Responsibilities

  • Organize two Wild and Scenic Film Festivals throughout the year and expand their reach   
  • Lead monthly Lessons on the River and other community education events 
  • Manage River Education Day for underserved youth at a summer camp run by partner park organization 
  • Coordinate and create outreach material for website, social media, digital mailings, and electronic communication to promote HC programs to diverse audiences. Topics may include river management, environmental science, stormwater, wildlife education, etc. 
  • Write and implement grants/proposals related to environmental education programs (up to 10% of service hours) 
  • Research, participate, and enhance new and existing events, and represent HC at community events  
  • Recruit and train volunteers  
  • Promote specialty “Rivers and Clean Water” license plate statewide 

Qualifications

Preferred Knowledge & Skills:

  • Must be a capable swimmer and comfortable in a kayak/canoe 
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills  
  • Experience in marketing, communications, or utilizing social media tools 
  • Passionate about environmental sustainability  
  • Ability to work outside and lift up to 50 pounds, in varying weather conditions throughout the year 

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Commitment to fulfill a one-year term of service (August 17, 2020-August 8, 2021) 
  • Bachelor’s Degree  
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable access to transportation (Members will be reimbursed for service-related mileage.)  
  • U.S. Citizenship  
  • National Service Criminal History Check clearance

  • Living allowance of $17,000, paid bi-weekly throughout the term of service
