Job Summary

The Environmental Education Coordinator participates in a yearlong term (1,700 hours) of AmeriCorps service supporting the Cumberland River Compact’s (Compact) goal to provide environmental knowledge to youth and to empower them to take action in their own community.The Coordinator helps expand the Compact’s capacity to deliver school programs by writing curriculum, developing partnerships, expanding outreach, and overseeing logistics. 

The Coordinator should have a desire to create and empower change through environmental education, and will gain experience in education planning, curriculum development, event logistics, and program management. 

The Coordinator serves as part of a 23-person cohort of civic-minded individuals who receive skills training, professional development, and networking opportunities through a partnership between the Compact and the Hands On Nashville (HON) AmeriCorps Program. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and administer school programs, including Creek Critters, STEAM lessons, and field trips 
  • Build organizational capacity to deliver youth programs through curriculum development, outreach, and evaluation 
  • Lead the high school Youth Climate Planning committee for development of the annual Nashville Youth Climate Summit and enhance the program’s implementation to improve environmental leadership outcomes  
  • Prepare curriculum, resources, and outreach materials for teacher trainings. 
  • Coordinate logistics, community engagement, evaluation, and volunteer recruitment for the annual Waterfest
  • Spearhead marketing, registration, and setup for River Talks, and find ways to improve the program delivery model including outreach and evaluation  
  • Represent the organization through community engagement with partners and schools 

Qualifications

Preferred Knowledge & Skills:

  • Confident public speaker with excellent written and verbal communication skills  
  • Background in education or teaching youth (with training to be provided for teaching programs) 
  • Passionate about environmental sustainability  

Minimum Requirements:

  • Commitment to fulfill a one-year term of service (August 17, 2020-August 8, 2021) 
  • Bachelor’s Degree  
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable access to transportation (Members will be reimbursed for service-related mileage.)  
  • U.S. Citizenship  
  • National Service Criminal History Check clearance

  • Living allowance of $17,000, paid bi-weekly throughout the term of service   
  • Education award of $6,095, applicable to student loans and/or future education expenses at an accredited institution, upon fulfillment of service obligations
