Job Summary

Reporting to the Tennessee Language Center Executive Director, the Director of the World Languages (WL) Program is responsible for the development, staffing, planning, organizing, directing, and management of the World Languages program, which includes group, custom and corporate classes, as well as coordination of training, motivating and supervision of world language part-time instructors and program staff. Additionally, in collaboration with the Executive Director, the Director of World Languages Programs has fiscal responsibility for the program including grant writing, budgeting, management and strategic planning. The Director is also active on the local and statewide levels in professional networking, promotion of WL programs, and community engagement.

Job Responsibilities

Management and Administration
– Responsible for the development, strategic planning and execution of world language programs to further the legislatively mandated mission of the TN Language Center
– Collaborates with TLC Leadership to leverage fiscal and other resources to fulfill mission
– Gathers competitive intelligence and analyzes long-range impact of decisions and plans, including rates and fees of service
– Actively seeks out and initiates new business relationships, partnerships and collaborations with university, government and private sector partners
– Coordinates and implements statewide expansion efforts
– Participates in leadership meetings and actively participates in state- and community-wide events to promote the activities of the program, serving as speaker and subject matter expert on language matters;
– Collaborates with marketing and communications to effectively promote program activities.

Language Class Program Administration
– Conducts and oversees personnel actions including hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, vacation and training scheduling
– Hires, supervises and trains part time world language instructors according to TLC methodology, ensuring consistent content and quality of service
– Selects and assigns teachers to group, custom and corporate classes according to predefined rubric of instructor skills and client need
– Determines calendar and plans courses to encourage participation and retention for student and clients.

Curriculum Development and Research
– Develops curricula and selects materials for group, custom, corporate classes for all languages and levels in collaboration with instructors;
– Stays current with current theory and best practices in second language acquisition, learning and teaching through independent study, professional development and training.
– Promotes an environment of continuous improvement of administrative processes and delegates appropriate responsibilities for implementation of innovations.
– Advises stakeholders on language acquisition and proficiency matters, making recommendations to further the mission of TLC.

Training, Program Evaluation & Professional Development
– Creates professional development sessions for TLC language staff and external language instructors throughout the community and state
– Appraises program effectiveness, providing results-based data to support outcomes
– Assesses students, provides targeted feedback and advises learners on their learning process; makes recommendations for enhancement of learning process
– Ensures the professional development of direct reports

Direct Service Delivery
– As needed, teaches classes in world languages or methodology
– As needed, facilitates placement and proficiency testing of language learners

Qualifications

Education:
Required: Master’s Degree in Education, Linguistics, Humanities or related field
Preferred: Doctoral Degree in Education, Linguistics, Humanities or related field
TESL certificate (may be obtained while on the job)

Experience:
Required: 5 years+ world language teaching experience OR combination of teaching and training experience
2 years+ supervisory/managerial experience
Preferred: 2+ years in educational administration
2+ years in non-profit or business management

Required Skills:
– Knowledge of one world language (ACTFL level 10 or higher, CEFR level C1 or higher, ILR level 3 or higher), to be assessed by TLC, in addition to demonstrated mastery of English as evaluated through written communication and direct conversation
– Ability to teach, train and supervise language instructors
– Knowledge of language acquisition theories and practice
– Ability to create and make presentations using multimedia in person and online platforms to diverse audiences in promotion of world language program
– Knowledge of financial management and bookkeeping
– Advanced computer skills including MS Office programs such as Teams, SharePoint, Word, Outlook, Excel, and other applications such as CRM and databases
– Advanced experience with learning management systems (LMS) word processing, and database management
– Ability to meet shifting deadlines and priorities

Preferred:
– Knowledge and skill in additional world languages a plus
– Knowledge of language business marketing and business management
