Job Summary

Developmental Services of Dickson County supports adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities in daily living tasks. The Director of Nursing will supervise nursing services in our 3 medical residential homes as well as medical needs in other homes as needed.

Job Responsibilities

  1. WORKING CONDITIONS

Works both on and outside of premises. Schedule may vary, including nights and weekends. Must be on call as required. Works effectively with minimal supervision. Position is exempt under FLSA guidelines.

2.  PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires walking, stooping, standing, and sitting. Maintain a sustained presence actively participating in a variety of activities.

3. DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

_______ 1. Ensures quality of nursing services by overseeing with authority the nursing or nursing-related duties of nursing staff and all direct support staff in sites where nursing services are provided.

_______ 2. Ensures quality health care by visiting each site involving nursing services at least twice monthly to observe and assess activities requiring licensed or delegated services; to observe and monitor the job performance of non-licensed direct support staff in all sites where nursing or nursing-related services are provided.

_______3. Maintains high quality nursing staff by participating in recruiting, interviewing, selecting, and orienting agency LPNs

_______4. Maintains nursing job results by coaching, counseling, and participating in correcting employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.

_______5. In conjunction with teams and staffing coordinators assures the adequacy of nursing and nursing-related services by making and adjusting work assignments; setting and adjusting schedules; scheduling replacement coverage for nurses during planned or unexpected absences; and delegating duties to LPNs and DSPs by training, supervision, and documentation.

_______6. Manages the agency’s medication administration procedures by training non-licensed staff to administer medications; monitoring the administration of medications; actively participating in the management of medication errors.

_______ 7. Ensures quality health care by becoming familiar with state and agency health care rules and guidelines; enforcing adherence to those rules and guidelines; measuring health outcomes against standards; initiating appropriate preventative and rehabilitative health care procedures; making or recommending necessary changes or adjustments.

_______ 8. Protects people supported and staff by monitoring adherence to infection-control policies and guidelines; enforcing medication administration regulations and procedures.

_______ 9. Ensures optimal health for persons supported by developing wellness and health maintenance plans; promoting prevention strategies; training support staff on health and health-related issues.

_______ 10. Ensures effective communication by being physically present at sites where nursing activities or operations are occurring on a regularly scheduled and unscheduled basis; scheduling frequent meetings with nurses and support staff; attending and participating on committees; responding to telephone calls and messages on a timely basis.

_______11. Ensures that nurses and other health-related staff have adequate skills to perform their essential job duties by assessing their training and staff development needs; providing or securing necessary training or retraining; focusing on “best practice” approaches; conducting periodic informational meetings.

 

_______12. Maintains effective health care supports by assuming duties of health-related staff in their absence; substituting for other nurses when necessary.

_______13. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional organizations.

_______14. Maintains confidentiality by not revealing privileged information and records concerning persons supported, their families, or other agency staff, as well as any additional information concerning the agency, its staff, clientele, or operations which may be considered to be of a confidential nature.

_______15. Represents the agency, its services, and the people supported to the public as required by participating in the agency’s public information efforts, including written and oral presentations.

_______16. Contributes to the agency efforts by accomplishing related results as needed or required.

Qualifications

Associate or Bachelor’s degree in nursing required with minimum of 5 years’ experience in nursing. Two-year supervisory experience and/or one-year experience working with individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Currently licensed in Tennessee as a professional registered nurse (RN).

Must possess excellent clinical skills, the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences both orally and in writing; the ability to work cooperatively with service recipients, their families, co-workers, the health care community, and the public.
