Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition

Deep Canvasser

Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition

Job Summary

TIRRC is looking for canvassers to join our innovative deep canvassing efforts.  This year, we continue the refugee resettlement and anti-blackness campaigns that we began in 2021.  As we look to welcome more refugees, it is crucial that we rebuild support for resettlement and asylum here in Tennessee.  We will also continue the important work of addressing anti-black racism within immigrant communities to build a powerful multiracial coalition that fights for justice for all.  In the fall, we will begin the exciting work of our first C4 electoral deep canvassing campaign in partnership with our sister organization, TIRRC VOTES.  Both paid and volunteer positions are available.

Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate against any individual on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, military or veteran status, marital status, or parental status. Immigrants, refugees, and people of color are strongly encouraged to apply.

Job Responsibilities

We will be building on our work with the Immigration Strategic Messaging Project, which showed for the first time that deep canvassing can meaningfully move people on both immigration policy and bias.  Our findings across three research efforts since 2018 overwhelmingly show that not only do people become more supportive of immigration through deep canvassing, but also that this movement is lasting.

Rather than seeking to garner support for a particular issue or candidate, deep canvassing draws on personal story and dialogue to measure overall support and opinions.  Canvassers will need to demonstrate skills in active listening, creating moments of empathy, and the ability to engage in potentially difficult conversations about immigration with people who may disagree.

We will be canvassing on the doors AND the phones this year!  Ideally, canvassers will be available for both, however there is no location requirement for applicants.  Canvassing will take place in middle TN.  Applicants must be 18 years of age or older to canvass on the doors and 16 years of age or older to canvass on the phones.

All canvassers are required to attend training on either June 2nd or 4th.  Those who have deep canvassed with us in the past will not be required to attend the entire training.  If you are unable to attend either date but would still like to be considered, please make note of this conflict or reach out to Emily Baird-Chrisohon at emily@tnimmigrant.org directly.

Proposed Canvassing Schedule:

June-August Refugee Resettlement and Anti-Blackness

2 weeks in August – Anti-Blackness

September-November – C4 Electoral Deep Canvassing

Qualifications

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older to canvass on the doors and 16 years of age or older to canvass on the phones.
