Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition

Job Summary

TIRRC is looking for deep canvassers to join our innovative deep canvassing efforts to move conflicted voters to be more supportive of immigrant communities and create a pro-immigrant majority.

Paid positions will begin at $16 an hour and will require a more rigorous canvassing schedule and training, including a commitment of at least 10 hours a month for a minimum of 2 months.  Hourly rates will increase when canvassing in neighborhoods further away from TIRRC’s office (or outside of Knoxville and Chattanooga proper) to compensate for increased driving time.  For those interested, there is a potential to canvass 15-20 hours a week.

Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate against any individual on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, military or veteran status, marital status, or parental status. Immigrants, refugees, and people of color are strongly encouraged to apply.

Job Responsibilities

We will be building on our work with the Immigration Strategic Messaging Project, which showed for the first time that deep canvassing can meaningfully move people on both immigration policy and bias.  Our findings across three research efforts since 2018 overwhelmingly show that not only do people become more supportive of immigration through deep canvassing, but also that this movement is lasting.  This fall we will be participating in deep canvassing research in partnership with the Butterfly Lab For Immigrant Narrative Strategy.

Rather than seeking to garner support for a particular issue or candidate, deep canvassing draws on personal story and dialogue to measure overall support and opinions.

Qualifications

Canvassers will need to demonstrate skills in active listening, creating moments of empathy, and the ability to engage in potentially difficult conversations about immigration with people who may disagree.
