We are hiring for a full-time Coordinator, Volunteer Engagement to join the Community Engagement team within the External Affairs department at Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee.

What you’ll do:
Summary: Volunteer Engagement Coordinator greets, trains, motivates, and manages volunteers responsible for food sorting activities in a warehouse environment. Ensures volunteer satisfaction by engaging with individuals and groups throughout the project. This position supports and fosters our deep commitment to diversity and inclusion, which is the foundation for creating a culture of belonging for all personnel.
- Hands-on volunteer management and customer service: Leads volunteer groups through food sorting, repackaging and assembly projects.
- Volunteer engagement and education: Motivates and engages volunteers, and educates them on organization mission, ways to be involved, and upcoming events/campaigns.
- Project/supplies management and food safety: Ensures that all volunteer projects are completed correctly and efficiently.
- Operations procedures/ Inventory control: Ensures accurate inventory control and communicates with the Operations department daily to coordinate the movement of palletized food and needed supplies.
- Required service hours management: Manages and assigns projects to volunteers completing required hours (such as court ordered community service, or school/work mandated hours) and confirms their completed hours as needed.
When & Where:
- Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and alternating Friday & Saturday from 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM, as well as Wednesday from 1 – 8:30 PM. This role works on-site and in-person primarily at our Nashville distribution center. For example, one week you’d work during the daytime on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and then Wednesday evening with Saturday off. Then the next week you’d work during the daytime on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and then Wednesday evening with Friday off. Occasional evenings and/or weekends may be required outside of normal working hours for meetings, special events, to respond to issues (e.g., disaster response, community events, etc).
- Travel: Occasional daytime travel required, up to 5% of work week within the local service area.

- Essential business/ first responder: In instances of a federal, state or locally declared emergency, Second Harvest is typically considered an essential business service and emergency responder. All employees may be required to perform regular or emergent duties on-site. Employee safety is balanced with business and community necessity. Some positions are more likely to be required on-site than others.
Is this you?
- Education: High School Diploma (or equivalent) required. Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
- Experience: 2+ years of related experience and/ or training required.
- Skills & Capabilities: communication skills with comfort engaging through a variety of methods (verbal, non-verbal and written) and is attuned to others through active listening; customer service and interpersonal skills; effectively delegates and coordinates tasks to others, while also ensuring that everyone is focused and motivated; time management skills; flexible and reliable team player; organizes work, sets priorities, exchanges information efficiently and effectively manages one’s own time; collaborates with and presents to diverse audiences in a variety of settings; comfortable in a warehouse work environment.
- Competencies: Attention to detail, results orientation and execution, quality improvement and customer service.
- Other requirements: our pre-hire process requires acceptable results from the following: professional reference feedback, criminal background, Motor Vehicle Record and a pre- employment drug test. Current Driver’s License and automobile insurance are also required. Criminal backgrounds are evaluated on a case-by-case basis considering several factors (timing, frequency, severity and job relation).

- Compensation & Benefits: Second Harvest is proud to offer rich and affordable total compensation packages. Total compensation for full-time employment includes many benefits, in addition to base pay. The paid days off policies include: 38+ day off for holidays, vacation, sick and personal time, as required by law.
