Job Summary

Full-time; Exempt

Summary: The goal of this position is to support the Civic Design Center’s community outreach and engagement efforts. The position will be responsible for design visioning of projects, as well as planning and implementing outreach and engagement activities for assigned projects and programs.

Job Responsibilities

Essential Duties + Responsibilities:

  • Assists in planning, coordinating and implementing public engagement activities with the goal of strengthening Civic Design Center’s community relationships;
  • Interpret community feedback and help to design and visualize potential solutions and outcomes;
  • Identify stakeholder groups and develop outreach strategies for connecting and collaboration;
  • Attend and help in-person or virtual meetings, events, or charrette processes;
  • Work with diverse communities to establish and strengthen working relationships with neighborhood groups, organizations, businesses and the public;
  • Prepares meeting materials, presentation and reports and provides leadership and support at meetings, takes notes and prepares meeting minutes or summaries;
  • Presents publicly the findings of design work and community input;
  • Set up online surveys, analyze data, maintain project websites and prepare and respond to community questions;
  • Support the design work of the Design Studio, TURBO, and Youth Programs (Design Your Neighborhood and Youth Design Team) and collaborate with Design Center Directors and Managers;
  • Construction skills are advantageous.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position may have supervisory responsibilities over staff, interns, and fellows that have been assigned to projects overseen by this position.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience related to city planning, architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, urban studies, community engagement or related field(s);
  • Experience with project management, particularly in the fields of city planning, architecture, or urban design
  • Knowledge and awareness of relevant city policies, planning histories, and political systems within Nashville;
  • Knowledge of the design charette process and best practices;
  • Have drawing, computer design, visualization, and sketching abilities.

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or other similar field. Experience coordinating and managing projects to ensure they comply with local, state, and federal guidelines.

Communication Skills:

  • Ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Strong presentation and communication skills;
  • Skilled in calendar functions for setting up public meetings;
  • Skilled in dealing with conflict and possibly stressful situations;
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as department procedures, federal and state guidelines;
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups;
  • Requires tact, courtesy and cooperation in dealings with others where the primary purpose is the exchange of information;
  • Promotes an equitable, positive and respectful work environment that values cultural and diverse employees.

Organizational Skills:

  • Ability to organize and maintain and coordinate projects, speak to community groups, and create and deliver presentations;
  • Experience with Adobe Suite and Sketch-up;
  • Intermediate to advanced skills with word processing, presentations, spreadsheets and databases sufficient to develop materials, presentations and track data.

Travel Requirements/ Work Schedule:

This position will require off site visits where public transportation may not be available or practical. Must have reliable transportation to travel to various locations throughout the transit service area. Position will require occasional evening and weekend hours outside of the regular work schedule.

Benefits

Compensation:

The Community Design Coordinator position is a full-time, exempt position providing an annual salary range between $45,000 to $55,000 depending upon relevant experience, plus the Design Center’s retirement and benefits package. The Design Center practices a 32-hour workweek and this position is considered full-time and full benefits-eligible at 32-hours a week.
