Job Summary

The Clubhouse at Park Center is an intentional working community that focuses on partnering with adults living with mental illness to rehabilitate back into the community. All Clubhouse staff share in assisting members to live vocationally productive and socially satisfying lives by returning to work and school, living independently, participating in their community, and developing a social support network. Program participants are perceived as “members” rather than “clients” or “patients”, and they work to maintain an informal setting to reduce the psychological distance between staff and members. Staff encourages members to assume productive roles both within the psychosocial Clubhouse facility and in the broader community. Generalists provide members support by working to maintain a flexible, varied program of vocational, educational, and recreational activities. They are actively involved with the development of supported employment pathways and placements in the community and actively involved with their sustainability.

Clubhouse Generalists will have a deep knowledge of the Clubhouse Model. This work will have the feel of a start-up, as this leader will help create a community that does not exist in east Nashville through the implementation of the Clubhouse Model. Clubhouse Generalists are energetic, positive individuals with the ability to motivate people. They have highly developed organizational and written and verbal communication skills. Generalists are able to work as part of a team as well as independently in an upbeat and dynamic environment. Generalists believe recovery for people with mental illness is possible and believe in the power of community. Generalists are self-starters, creative thinkers, have an encouraging demeanor, and can maintain a high level of energy and focus for a full workday. Clubhouse Generalists have outstanding interpersonal skills and like to have fun!

Job Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Work with clients (“Members”) to implement the Clubhouse Model

  • Work in close collaboration with staff team and members to meet goals, promote a positive work environment, and advance the quality of services provided to members of the Clubhouse.
  • Actively engage members, and work with and alongside members in the work-ordered day, to identify needs in the unit and the Clubhouse. Coordinate tasks with small and large groups.
  • Exhibit a high tolerance for ambiguity and an ability to create and implement structure.
  • Engage members in all activities and in decision-making.
  • Assist members in planning out a full day’s worth of work and ensure those needs are met.
  • Plan activities and perform tasks associated with the Clubhouse units.
  • Complete work if members are unwilling.
  • Complete tasks assigned specifically to Clubhouse Generalists that are not appropriate for members to complete. Examples include but are not limited to entering progress notes into the electronic health record, confirming insurance or other methods of payment, reviewing and following up on voicemails/emails, interviewing prospective Clubhouse members, etc.
  • Identify and encourage the skills, talents, creative ideas, and efforts of each member each day. Assess member strengths and challenges and acknowledge achievements consistently.
  • Exhibit positivity and the belief in the power of community.
  • Participate in social/recreational activities on some weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • Serve as an advisor, advocate, and resource for members. Support members’ goals to find meaningful work outside the Clubhouse through IPS and supported employment.
  • Participate in outreach activities aimed at engaging members in coming to the Clubhouse.

2. Values cultural competence and diversity

  • Collaborates with staff, members, and the community to gain the perspectives of others having diverse opinions, abilities, values, beliefs, perspectives, and ethnic or cultural backgrounds.
  • Takes deliberate steps to increase own cultural competency by attending trainings, events, discussions, workshops, etc.

3. Other duties

  • Learns agency policies and follows them accurately.
  • Attends all necessary staff meetings and training.
  • Participates in member activities as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college in social work, sociology, or another related field.
  • Two (2) years of experience in a mental health or social service setting. The lived experience of being hospitalized psychiatrically or receiving mental health services is preferred.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and teamwork in the delivery of services.
  • Possesses a strong desire to help others with empathy, patience, understanding, enthusiasm, and dedication.
  • Demonstrates professionalism in communication, empathy, attendance, attention to accuracy and follow through, teamwork, and punctuality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with members and staff.
  • Demonstrates high standards of professional and ethical behavior.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to show proof of personal automobile insurance.
  • Must be insurable under Park Center’s automobile insurance.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Works in an office setting with limited remote work options. Attends community outings with members. This position requires evening, weekend, and holiday work.
  • The position requires frequent physical activity including standing, walking, bending, and kneeling. You may be required to lift or move heavy objects up to 30 lbs. occasionally.
  • Manual dexterity is necessary for certain tasks, such as food preparation in the kitchen. Part of the job may be performed in an outdoor setting where exposure to various weather conditions should be expected. This can include tasks such as landscaping or maintenance duties.
  • Work will also take place in an industrial kitchen, where you’ll be exposed to heat, noise, and occasional humidity. Safety gear such as gloves, protective eyewear, or aprons may be necessary depending on the task.
