Job Summary

We are looking to hire a Child Anti-Hunger Advocate to support the work we do to improve our state’s nutrition programs and policies. If you’re ambitious, enjoy building relationships, and are over-the-top organized, then this could be the job for you. This position reports directly to our Director of Nutrition Advocacy and interacts regularly with our health advocacy team.

A typical day might look like:

  • Communicating with community partners, local agencies, and advocates about the work we are doing and how they can support it
  • Developing creative social media and email campaigns to educate Tennesseans about child nutrition policy issues
  • Meeting with elected officials and policy experts to advance school meals for all legislation in Tennessee
  • Researching data and providing policy analysis of child nutrition legislation

Job Responsibilities

The Anti-Hunger Advocate is responsible for both the big-picture strategic vision and the day-to-day operations of a policy advocacy campaign. Working with coalition partners, elected officials, and other stakeholders, the Child Anti-Hunger Advocate develops, executes, and regularly refines the campaign plan for maximum impact on key decision-makers and the optimal inclusion of those who will be impacted by the proposed policy change. Drawing upon relevant data and research, the Child Anti-Hunger Advocate will eave together and coordinate a set of strategies and tactics including but not limited to grassroots organizing, media advocacy, lobbying, and coalition pressure.  This position reports to the Senior Director of Nutrition Advocacy. In this position, you are responsible for:

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive campaign plan that is responsive to changing campaign needs and opportunities;
  • Manage and engage other staff, and campaign core partners so they can successfully achieve their assigned pieces of the campaign plan;
  • Recruit and engage a broad base of partner organizations and advocates for our coalition, including representation from science/academia, communities of color, youth, civic organizations, non-profit agencies, local employers, social/economic justice organizations, business associations, and more;
  • Understand the details of pending legislation, and persuade lawmakers to write and support legislation that expands child nutrition programs in Tennessee;
  • Meet regularly with lawmakers about school meals campaign priorities and pending legislation; attend relevant committee hearings and remain a presence on the Hill during the legislative session; 
  • Create all internal and external communication about legislative priorities, including but not limited to summaries, white papers, TJC websites, earned media, social media, toolkits, advocate’s talking points, and training for partners. 
  • Engage schools, partner organizations, advocates, and legislators in events about school meals for all, including conferences, town halls, site visits, and a Day on the Hill in 2025. 
  • Represent the mission of the funder and lead organizations in a non-partisan manner.
  • Maintain compliance with all state and federal lobbying requirements; and other duties as assigned.
