Job Summary

Youth Encouragement Services is a Christian non-profit organization that provides after-school and summer programs for children who reside in Nashville’s economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. Our comprehensive approach encourages children to grow spiritually, academically, physically, and socially. We provide tutoring, homework assistance, recreational programs, summer camps, and more. Our goal is to help the youth we serve excel at school, graduate high school, and become productive members of their communities. We also work closely with a host of agency partners, including churches and schools.

We are seeking a director for our center in the Woodbine neighborhood of south Nashville. The center director will implement and oversee the after-school and summer programs, supervise staff and volunteers, manage the facilities, coordinate the winter basketball league, and work directly with youth.

This position is responsible for the direction and implementation of all youth programming (K-12th grade) and personnel at the Center.  While the Center Director is not expected to carry out all functions of the various programs, the responsibility of the smooth operation of programs by the employees and the volunteers is a function of this position.

Job Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

After-School Program

  • Plan and supervise daily activities for children—all programming, chapel, meals
  • Communicate regularly with parents and maintain all necessary enrollment forms, permission slips, and attendance records
  • Maintain proper discipline of children
  • Train and supervise after-school and summer interns 
  • Recruit, train and thank the volunteers
  • Supervise transportation of children to and from all programming as necessary

Facility Management

  • Make sure Center and grounds are clean and maintained properly
  • Make repairs as needed to building and grounds or contract with appropriate labor
  • Maintain or contract maintenance of vans
  • Responsible for scheduling usage of the Center

 

Basketball League—Directed by McIver Center Director (Dec. through Mid-Mar.)

  • Recruit necessary personnel: officials, concessions workers, and coaches (stress the Christian conduct expectations)
  • Maintain all appropriate records: permission slips, eligibility, rosters, statistics, filing, etc.
  • Arrange schedule of practices, and provide transportation for YES students to and from practices and games as necessary
  • Maintain cleanliness of facilities  
  • Maintain accurate financial record
  • Make sure spiritual integrity of league is upheld
  • Maintain basketball league website
  • Conduct a banquet to celebrate completion of season and encourage the kids

 

Summer Program

  • Plan and supervise daily activities for children—all programming, chapel, meals
  • Conduct weekly field trips and special activities
  • Coordinate mission groups

 

Tutoring Program

  • Provide transportation and meals for the children
  • Keep current records/report cards on each student
  • Keep accurate records on volunteers

Summer Camp

  • Plan and coordinate daily rotation of activities and special events
  • Secure speakers and plan chapel sessions for the two-weeks of camp
  • Coordinate Bible classes, teachers, materials, and locations for each day of camp
  • Coordinate healthy meal-plan and food system with head cook.
  • Maintain all documentation and necessary records of children attending camp
  • Communicate schedules, rules and expectations with parents
  • Responsible for hiring and training: arts & crafts teachers, cooks, and appropriate counselors (coordinate with YES office to conduct necessary background checks)
  • Maintenance camp of while there to ensure cleanliness after sessions are completed

 

Christmas Store

  • Obtain necessary information on participating parents
  • Assist with pick-ups of donated items as requested by the main office
  • Be available at Christmas Store while parents are shopping.

Spiritual Development

  • Encourage the spiritual development of students through appropriate activities and relationships with churches
  • Encourage children to attend church and assist with making arrangements for their transportation
  • Make sure all aspects of the program are consistent with Christian values

Honor Roll Trip

  • Responsible for planning the date, destination, and itinerary of the trip; including accommodations and necessary attraction reservations
  • Distribute eligibility guidelines and obtain documentation for verification
  • Recruit and train volunteer chaperones
  • Communicate with parents regarding itinerary and necessary contact information

 

Community Awareness & Service Projects

  • Conduct quarterly service projects; coordinating with local organizations when possible
  • Assist in soliciting financial support from individuals and businesses in the surrounding community

Qualifications

Education, Experience, & Skills:

  • College degree (preferably in a related field)
  • At least three years’ experience working with a diverse population of underprivileged children (preferably from under resourced communities context)
  • Some proficiency in Spanish preferred (but not required)
  • Ability to relate well to students, parents, staff, and volunteers
  • Ability to write and communicate effectively to students, parents, and community partners
  • Active membership in a local congregation

Health Insurance:        A health insurance policy will be provided for all full-time employees

Vacation:                     Two weeks paid vacation per year.

Three weeks paid vacation after five years of employment.

Paid holidays as specified in Policies & Procedures Manual.
