Job Summary
Position: Summer Camp Counselor
Department: Camps
Reports to: Programs Coordinator
FLSA Designation: Non-Exempt, F/T Seasonal (Up to 40 hours/week while camp in session)
Pay Rate: $15/hour

POSITION OVERVIEW
Camp at Adventure Science Center (ASC) provides a wide range of science enrichment programs for youth ages 5-11. Programs combine science, technology, engineering, and math in ways that encourage kids to actively discover and examine concepts for themselves. We inspire a life-long passion for learning and teach kids creative problem-solving skills, teamwork, persistence, and follow-through in a fun learning environment.
Important Dates for the 2025 Camp Season:
- Paid training will take place Monday, May 12 – Friday, May 16
- Camp sessions run weekly, Monday, May 26– Friday, August 1 (no camp June 30- July 4)
- Shifts may vary week to week; camp is open 7:30 am – 5:30 pm
Consistent with the mission and vision of Adventure Science Center, and under the direction of the Programs Coordinator, the Camp Counselor is responsible for supervising his/her assigned group of up to 20 campers that are organized by rising grade levels 1st-5th (ages range 5-11). Camp staff maintain the safety of the campers and ensure the camp’s daily program runs efficiently through detailed supervision and objective decision-making. Camp counselors utilize set curriculum, organized supplies, and established programming to facilitate exciting, memorable camp experiences and activities.
Job Responsibilities
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide every camper with a safe, fun, memorable, and educational experience.
- Encourage a positive and exciting learning environment, fostering passion for STEM and Adventure Science Center.
- Actively supervise and interact with campers, facilitating activities and experiments with a focus on STEM content
- Utilize creativity, innovation, and inspiration while facilitating camp activities
- Proactively engage campers in personal, inspiring interactions
- Assist during emergency and evacuation situations
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
- Enthusiasm for working with kids and education
- Must be willing to take initiative, be flexible and possess a “can-do” attitude
- Reliable, courteous and collaborative team player
- Capacity to execute time management and multi-task
- Ability to think in the abstract, solve problems, make decisions, instruct, evaluate, lead others
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Education: High School graduate. Background in STEAM/STEM education a plus
- Ability to manage large groups in a fun, educational environment
- Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation/facilitation skills
- Positive attitude required: strong desire to work with and inspire children from diverse backgrounds in a fun, learning atmosphere
- First Aid/CPR/AED (Adult and/or Pediatric) certification preferred (training will be provided if candidate does not have current certification)
- The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts requiring normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations.
- Typically, walking, standing, bending and carrying light items (up to 20 pounds unassisted), and 50 pounds assisted are required. At times, the employee may sit comfortably to do the work. Also, the employee must have manual dexterity, visual and auditory acuity.
- Some repetitive motion is involved.
