Job Summary

Director of Day Camping and Children’s Services provides strategic direction for development and management of Camp Davis, a day camp for 200 children weekly in grades K-10, and for all programs and activities for school-age children (K-6) and their families. The position requires an organized, creative leader with passion for youth and camping. The Camp Director must be enthusiastic, adaptable and dependable and possess great communication skills.

Job Responsibilities

Camp:

  • Program development, implementation, and enhancement
  • Camper recruitment and registration
  • Camp marketing including working with Marketing Staff to create camp brochure, ads and promotional pieces, Parent Manual and all camp forms
  • Recruitment, Supervision and Evaluation of camp staff
  • Foster a sense of camp ruach and serve as a positive role model for staff and campers
  • Implementation of a successful Shaliach program
  • Plan and lead weekly camp staff meetings
  • Administrative responsibilities

Supervision:

  • Interview, hire, train and manage, full-time and part-time staff in Children, Youth, and Camp department, including Camp Counselors and Specialists, and Shalichim.
  • Oversee the supervision and administration all Youth, Family and Camp programs including: Kids Konnection, Enrichment classes, School’s Out programs (including vacation days, mini-camps, conference days, in-service days, snow days, etc.), Kids clubs, and family and holiday programs.

 

Budgeting:

  • Develop, implement and monitor departmental budgets
  • Assist with fundraising and grant proposals for the department

 

Agency Wide and Lay Leadership:

  • Staff the Camp and Youth Committee and assist with their goals of increasing camp attendance, enhancing the camp programs and meeting the mission of the GJCC.
  • Develop and implement Children’s and Holiday programs with other GJCC staff, namely Hanukkah Fest
  • Assist, as needed and appropriate, to plan and implement interdepartmental or agency-wide programs
  • Responsibilities may change according to the needs of the agency

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related field
  • A proven, progressive track record of 3-5 years’ experience leading a Day Camp and Children’s programs
  • Must have or be willing to obtain American Red Cross CPR and First Aid Certification

General Skills:

  • Basic computer skills:  Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel
  • Must be organized and able to manage and prioritize multiple tasks, meet deadlines and manage time
  • Must be able to work as a part of a team and to resolve conflicts
  • Must be able to take initiative to solve problems and be willing to seek assistance in solving problems
  • Must be able to communicate well in written communication and verbally
  • Must be flexible to work occasional long days or nights
  • Must be able to cope with potentially demanding members
  • Must be able to handle emergency and crisis situations
  • Must provide excellent customer service and be customer (member) focused

 

Supervisory Skills:

  • Must be able to evaluate staff and provide positive and critical feedback
  • Must be able to appropriately delegate tasks to subordinates
  • Must be able to conduct quality job interviews

 

Judaic Knowledge:

  • Must be knowledgeable of Jewish holidays and rituals
  • Must have an understanding about Israel and its culture
  • Must be able to use Jewish knowledge to develop curriculum and program outline for children, youth and families

Child Centeric Skills:

  • Knowledge of behavior management
  • Knowledge of child development
  • Must be able to negotiate conflicts between children
  • Maintenance of a safe environment
  • Provision of quality, age-appropriate and Jewish programs
