Job Summary

Penuel Ridge Retreat Center is a registered 501(c)(3) corporation in the State of Tennessee and is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. We are seeking individuals to serve as Voting Members of the Board with the potential to serve in an officer position after the first year of service. Board Terms are 2 years with the ability to serve successive terms.

Job Responsibilities

The responsibility of each Board Member and collectively as a whole is to:

  1. Take reasonable actions when making decisions for the organization (the duty of care)
  2. Act in the best interest of the organization (the duty of loyalty)
  3. Act in accordance with the organization’s mission (the duty of obedience)
  4. Stand aside when there is a conflict of interest; sign our conflict of interest statement (duty of recusal)

Board members are legally responsible for overseeing implementation of policies and programs of the mission and have a fiduciary responsibility to the fiscal well-being of the organization. 

Board meetings are held once a month and all Board members are expected to attend, either in person or virtually.

The work of the Board encompasses:

  • alignment of programs and services with the current mission statement and strategic plan
  • assessment of clarity and relevance of the mission programs and services in relation to the needs of constituents and wider community
  • provision of oversight to ensure compliance with legal requirements of the State of Tennessee and the IRS
  • adherence to governing policies and procedures as established in the by-laws and by the Board of Directors
  • approval and monitoring of the annual budget
  • participation in outreach, serving as positive voices for the organization
  • connection with potential constituents, donors, leadership candidates, volunteers, and resources to the organization

Qualifications

Qualifications include:

  • Expertise and/or leadership qualities in the areas of: administration/management, financial oversight, fundraising & event planning, program development, law, marketing, public relations, strategic planning, facilities management, understanding of community needs
  • Access to Resources such as: availability for active participation, financial resources to give, access to others with financial resources to give, and access to other resources, such as in-kind donations of goods and services
  • Possess Personal Style such as: consensus builder, good communicator, strategist, team member and/or visionary

The Board of Directors is a collective of persons with numerous leadership skills which are helpful in executing the role and responsibilities of the Board. Penuel Ridge uses Cliftons StrengthsFinder as a tool to assess the skills of candidates and how they might compliment the skillsets of the existing Board.
