Volunteer Board Member Job Summary:

As a Volunteer Board Member for the Healing Arts Project Inc. HAPI, you will play a crucial role in guiding the strategic direction and governance of our organization. Your responsibilities will include attending regular board meetings, participating in committee work, providing oversight and support for organizational initiatives, and leveraging your expertise to help achieve our mission. This role requires a commitment to our cause, strong leadership skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with other board members and staff. Your contributions will directly impact our ability to serve the community and promote the healing power of art.

Job Responsibilities

Participation:

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to the work of the organization.
  • Be aware of and abstain from any conflict of interest.
  • Stay well-informed about HAPI’s programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Review all Board meeting agendas in advance.
  • Attend Board meetings punctually. If absence is unavoidable, notify the Board Chair in advance. Failure to notify for up to two absences may result in dismissal from the Board.
  • Foster positive working relationships with other Board members, HAPI staff, community members, and funders.
  • Serve on at least one committee (Operations, Programming, Events/Outreach, or Development) and attend its meetings.
  • Assume Board leadership responsibilities (Executive Committee service, Operations, Programming, Events/Outreach, or Development Committee leadership) as requested and as possible.
  • Collaborate with other Board members to ensure the agency’s financial affairs are conducted responsibly and in accordance with established policies and strategic goals.
  • Contribute to the establishment of HAPI’s strategic goals.
  • Share knowledge and viewpoints based on experience, respecting other members’ viewpoints and speaking time. Work as a member of the group to help the Board reach collective decisions.

Fundraising and Community Relations Support:

  • Contribute financially to HAPI at an appropriate level, as discussed with the Executive Committee.
  • Support the Executive Director in pursuing funding for HAPI and support the fundraising efforts of staff and volunteers.
  • Promote HAPI within your network.
  • Represent HAPI with integrity at community and special events.

Qualifications

  • Commitment to the Mission: A strong belief in and commitment to the organization’s mission and values.
  • Leadership Skills: Proven leadership abilities and experience in guiding teams or organizations.
  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to think strategically and contribute to the development of long-term goals and plans.
  • Financial Acumen: Understanding of financial statements, budgeting, and financial oversight (not required but preferred)
  • Ethical Judgment: High ethical standards and the ability to make decisions in the best interest of the organization.
  • Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate with other board members, staff, and stakeholders.
  • Diversity and Inclusion: Commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion within the organization.
  • Relevant Experience: Experience in areas relevant to the organization’s work, such as fundraising, marketing, legal, or specific industry expertise.
  • Time Commitment: Willingness to commit the necessary time for board meetings, committee work, and other responsibilities (every 3rd Monday). Except for State Holiday.
