Job Summary
The Chair of the Nashville Tree Conservation Corps (NTCC) is a key leadership role responsible for guiding the board of directors and ensuring effective governance. This position requires a strategic thinker who can facilitate board meetings, collaborate with the executive director, and oversee long-term planning to support NTCC’s mission. The Chair plays a vital role in stakeholder relations, advocacy, financial oversight, and board development, ensuring NTCC continues to promote, preserve, protect, and plant trees in Nashville. Ideal candidates will have experience in nonprofit leadership, governance, and community engagement.
Job Responsibilities
- Leadership and Governance: The chair provides leadership to the board of directors and ensures effective governance. This includes setting the strategic direction, guiding board discussions and decision-making, and ensuring the board operates in accordance with its bylaws and legal obligations.
- Board Management: The chair manages the board of directors, including organizing and facilitating board meetings, setting meeting agendas in collaboration with the executive director, and ensuring board members have the necessary information to fulfill their duties. They may also oversee board orientation and development initiatives.
- Relationship with Executive Director: The chair often works closely with the executive director. They provide support and guidance, participate in performance evaluations, and collaborate on key organizational matters. The chair serves as a liaison between the board and executive leadership.
- Strategic Planning: The chair plays a key role in the strategic planning process. They work with the board and executive leadership to develop long-term goals, objectives, and strategies that align with our mission. The chair helps ensure that the strategic plan is implemented effectively.
- Stakeholder Relations: The chair represents NTCC to external stakeholders, such as donors, partners, government agencies, and the community at large. They may participate in public events, engage in fundraising efforts, and foster relationships that support our mission and goals.
- Financial Oversight: The chair, in collaboration with the treasurer and finance committee, ensures sound financial management and oversight. This includes reviewing financial statements, budgets, and audits, and ensuring NTCC operates within its financial means and in compliance with relevant regulations.
- Board Development and Succession Planning: The chair plays a role in identifying and recruiting new board members who bring diverse skills and expertise. They may also support board member development and engage in succession planning to ensure smooth transitions in board leadership over time.
- Conflict Resolution and Mediation: The chair may be called upon to facilitate conflict resolution within the board or between the board and staff members. They help maintain a positive and productive board culture by promoting open communication and addressing conflicts in a fair and timely manner.
- Advocacy and Public Relations: The chair may engage in advocacy efforts on behalf of NTCC. They may represent our positions on relevant issues, engage in public speaking, and contribute to raising awareness about NTCC’s work.
- Evaluation and Continuous Improvement: The chair, in collaboration with the board, evaluates NTCC’s performance and progress toward its goals. They identify areas for improvement, monitor the implementation of strategic initiatives, and support a culture of learning and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
There are no specific formal requirements for this role. However, the ideal candidate will have:
- A passion for urban forestry, conservation, and NTCC’s mission
- Experience in leadership, governance, or nonprofit board service (preferred but not required)
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
- The ability to facilitate meetings, guide strategic discussions, and collaborate effectively
- A commitment to fostering community engagement and advocacy efforts
- Experience in fundraising, financial oversight, or public relations (a plus but not necessary)
