Job Summary

The Birth Parent Counselor will provide a continuum of services to birth parents including prevention, education, support linkage, and individual and family counseling.

Job Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following and other duties as assigned.

  • Attend and facilitate support groups for birth parents in identified regions
  • Educate birth parents on current clinical insights into grief and loss.
  • Participate in all community meetings that are pertinent to the clients being served, e.g. M-Team, court hearings, etc.
  • Provide case management services to clients by providing referrals to community resources, advocacy, and assessment of family strengths, needs, and risk factors
  • Identify additional sources of assistance or connections for the individual/family and make appropriate referrals
  • Attend CFTMs and maintain regular communication with DCS personnel as warranted
  • Clinically assess needs of the individual and family
  • Provide and coordinate services to individuals and families by, among other things, contacting the family by telephone within 24 business hours of being assigned a new case and scheduling a session at the earliest convenience for the client
  • Provide individual and family counseling at identified program locations
  • Utilize evidence-based, trauma informed treatment models/ approaches that are relevant and appropriate for this client population
  • Responsible for the timely submission of documentation into program database within operational guidelines
  • Assist in the marketing of the Birth Families Grief and Loss Program through participation in presentations, trainings, meetings, or providing case consultation to DC.
  • Engage in individual and group professional development activities
  • Adhere to agency policy regarding ethical and professional code of conduct
  • Regular and ongoing participation in various conference calls.
  • Regular attendance and reliable transportation required.

Qualifications

This position requires a Master’s Degree in Mental Health (MHC), Professional Counseling (PC), Social Work (MSSW), or equivalent with 2-3 years of direct experience working with families and children.  Licensed or license eligible preferred.
