Job Summary

The assistant director assists in planning and implementing activities to meet the long-term goal of supporting annual, capital and endowment efforts through major gifts ($25,000 and above) as well as planned gifts.

Meeting with donors and prospects to qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward planned and major gifts, the assistant director of development for major gifts works as part of a collaborative team of high performing development professionals. This position reports to the director of development. This position is focused on visiting with, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors and prospects for major and planned gifts. This position holds the primary responsibility for gifts of estates, trusts, and other plans that reflect financial planning and deferred giving opportunities for Brentwood Academy.

Job Responsibilities

  • Cultivate a culture of Biblically based generosity.
  • Manage a portfolio of 150 major and planned giving donors.
  • Engage in a minimum of 20 personal visits each month.
  • Present gift opportunities that align with Brentwood Academy’s priorities and the donor’s philanthropic goals.
  • Honor and respect each donor, pursuing relationships in a setting of confidentiality and trust.
  • Develop written proposals, illustrations, gift agreements, renewal letters, and other donor communications.
  • Implement Brentwood Academy’s planned giving and endowment plan.
  • Participate in major and planned giving donor events, including planning, execution, and speaking roles, as required.
  • Promptly document donor contacts in donor management system following established protocols.
  • Provide regular reports on prospect management and fundraising results.
  • Execute a “moves management” system while working with donors.
  • Work to ensure donor retention.
  • With the support of the BA Communications Department, develop collateral materials to support major and planned giving programs.
  • Coach board members, volunteers and staff members with blended or planned giving solicitations (provides portfolio development support, strategic/technical counsel, and help with donor communications).
  • Demonstrate a growth mindset by establishing and maintaining professional competency in independent school advancement work through professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional programs, and maintaining appropriate professional memberships.
  • Develop and maintain cordial and professional working relationships with BA faculty, staff, students, administrators, and appropriate off-campus constituencies.
  • Other duties as assigned by director of development.

Qualifications

  • Five or more years of fundraising experience in prospect management, donor cultivation and solicitation (or comparable experience) ideally in a Christ-centered independent school or university.
  • Bachelor’s degree, graduate degree preferred.
  • Experience discussing legacy giving or estate planning with donors (or clients).
  • Experience cultivating and closing charitable gifts of five figures or higher or working with clients in estate or financial planning.
  • Experience developing and implementing communications materials.
  • Success in making presentations.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or comparable software.
  • Self-motivated, collaborative and unifying team player.
  • Ability to participate in donor events, including occasional evenings and weekends, and travel to donor meetings.
  • Ability to develop strategic long-term donor relationships while achieving bottom-line results.
  • An understanding of current laws regarding taxability of donations, regulations pertaining to fundraising—especially planned gifts, deferred giving strategies, and knowledge of a diverse array of financial instruments are essential.
  • Knowledge of general accounting practices.
  • Well-developed leadership abilities.
