Position Description

This position announcement is for Arts Strategic Funding & Initiatives Manager (AS Mgr) – Arts Commission, a full-time Civil Service position in Metro Arts Commission.  This position leads the strategic funding programs and initiatives of the Metro Nashville Arts Commission. The Strategic Funding & Initiatives Manager directly oversees the administration and evaluation of public grants, individual artist funding, racial equity and diversity initiatives, and other community programs and initiatives that expand the mission of Metro Arts to drive a vibrant and equitable community through the arts. This position serves on the organization’s executive leadership team, manages the Strategic Initiatives and Funding team, and works closely with the Executive Director on the development of strategic plans, projects and initiatives that support the agency’s mission.

Job Responsibilities

Typical Duties

Oversees Funding Programs

  • Develops funding priorities, criteria, guidelines, and applications.
  • Administers the Grants and Funding Committee of the Board of Commissioners.
  • Provides financial oversight of all grants and strategic funding awards with the Director of Finance.
  • Manages funding processes for all grants and funding programs including:  THRIVE, Opportunity Now, and Restorative Arts programs.
  • Oversees the administration of funding review panels and the training and recruitment of panelists.
  • Designs and oversees evaluation efforts to measure impact of public investment in the arts.

Leads Strategic Initiatives 

  • Develops policies and manages programs and initiatives that drive equity and inclusion in the arts including REAL (Racial Equity in Arts Leadership), DIAL (Diversity in Arts Leadership) and the ARTt (Anti-Racism Transformation Team).
  • Manages programs that support the community arts ecosystem including Restorative Arts and Opportunity Now.
  • Seeks, develops and administers external funding opportunities related to agency goals.
  • Supports the capacity building of artists and arts organization through development of funding programs, professional development and training opportunities.
  • Works closely with the Executive Director on strategic and cultural planning processes.
  • Participates in partnership development meetings for agency-related initiatives.
  • Leads opportunity and capacity analysis and makes recommendations on resource allocation.
  • Manages consultants and vendors as needed.

  Provides Team Leadership 

  • Ensures Strategic Funding & Initiatives team functions in its highest capacity.
  • Facilitates clear, precise and open feedback within a continuous improvement environment; responsible for employee evaluations and documentation of work performance.
  • Supports a climate of accountability, respect, integrity, and collaboration.
  • With executive leadership team members, seeks process improvements for the agency.

General Duties

  • Conducts research relevant to position.
  • Provides data and reporting to the Executive Director as necessary.
  • Participates in meetings and briefings with Metro Council and other elected officials.
  • Develops communications content as needed.
  • Serves as community arts and funding expert on panels, training and other events assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree and (5) years of experience in arts program management.

Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Arts or Arts administration
  • Experience in strategic planning
  • Skill with innovation in arts grantmaking
  • Experience in creative project management
  • Proficiency in Spanish or Kurdish
