Job Summary

The Adventure Specialist is responsible for organizing and delivering council adventure programs that meet the needs and interests of girls throughout our 39 county service area and supporting council programs. Additionally, this position supports and advises adventure activities in summer camp programming and develops/implements non-adventure programming on a seasonal basis.

Job Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

Adventure:
    Independently manage all council outdoor adventure and activity offerings available on GSMIDTN properties to troops, service units, outside groups and council programs.
    Recruit, develop and manage a group of facilitators consisting of part-time employees and volunteers that act as a resource for programs and activities and aid in delivery and development.
    Coordinate staff, training and schedules for all adventure ensuring that requirements for GSUSA and the American Camp Association are met including staff certifications and skills verification.
    Communicate with staff, facilitators and volunteers ensuring confirmation packets, billing statements, schedules and other paperwork (health forms, risk waivers, permission slips) are completed.
    Reconcile schedules, payroll, attendance and payments weekly.
    Maintain accurate files on supplies, inventory, staff verification, new-hire paper work, and staff evaluations, .
    Manage, maintain and replace all equipment as needed (ropes, challenge course hardware, archery supplies, signage, etc.)
    Conduct current and ongoing training for adventure facilitators and adult volunteers.
    Ensure that all activities and facilities conform to the Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee’s risk and safety management system and comply with federal, state and local regulations, GSUSA policies and ACA accreditation standards related to health, safety and security.
    Build and promote Adventure programs through establishing and maintaining partnerships with Membership, Communications and outside partners.
Camp Support:
    Arrange and manage adventure training for summer camp staff.
    Participate in opening and closing of summer camp (ensuring that each program area has appropriate equipment in good repair and is clean and organized).
    Serve as adventure support during summer camp; provide training, assistance and staffing as needed.
    Evaluate camp adventure programs and staff, implement efficiencies and improvements.
Program Support:
    Develop, organize and deliver programming within the focus areas of our Council that meets the needs and interests of our girl membership including Compass programming for Older Girls and other programs tangential to adventure.
    Work within the established budget to meet the operational and staffing needs of the programs, including equipment, supplies, food, and staffing levels.
    Respond to family and volunteer concerns about council program(s) in a timely, professional and empathetic manner.

Qualifications

Education/Experience Required:

    Bachelor’s degree in recreation, outdoor education, youth development, or leisure, or related     work experience
    Experience in program delivery and/or development with emphasis in outdoor education.
    Experience in outdoor recreation including hiking, fire-building high challenge, rappelling, and     paddle Sports.
    Customer service experience including timely communication, and problem solving.
    Girl Scouts experience is preferred.
    CPR, Lifeguard Instructor, ACCT Level 2, and/or Wilderness First Aid certified, or the desire     and ability to become certified as part of employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

    Knowledge of youth programming, with an emphasis in outdoor education and/or recreation.
    Proven ability to plan and organize.
    Ability to relate well to girl and adult audiences.
    Honest, strong work ethic, solution-oriented with a positive attitude.
    Good communication skills, both oral and written.
    Technologically literate with the ability to learn, adapt to and utilize new platforms and         programs effectively.
    Ability to work with a variety of people and sensitivity to pluralism issues.
    Belief in the purpose, values, and mission of Girl Scouts of the USA and the Girl Scouts of     Middle Tennessee.
    Ability to pass a criminal background check.

Physical Working Conditions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may sit or stand for prolonged periods of time, walk at a brisk pace on uneven terrain and climb stairs.  The employee will work in the outdoors, which includes regular exposure to heat and humidity during resident camp.  The employee may lift, carry or otherwise move and position objects weighing up to 20 pounds, and will climb, hike, paddle, and swim.
