Critical Competency for Board Members in Nonprofit Racial Equity Work

I serve on a board of a nonprofit committed to antiracist Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. What do I need to know to be invested in support of this work?

Since 1986, Crossroads Antiracism Organizing & Training has been providing organizing, facilitation, capacity building and consulting to organizations striving to dismantle racism and other oppressions. Boards of nonprofits play a unique role in support of organizations trying to serve the community in antiracist and equitable ways.  CNM and Crossroads are partnering to bring this new workshop to Nashville.
This workshop is great for nonprofit board members and leaders who want to start the conversation about the needs for critical cultural competency and shared understanding of systemic racial inequity in their organization. This session is an introductory course for organizations and people who are ready to start conversations and learning about societal systemic inequity and  intersectional (race, gender, socio-economic status, age, ability, etc.) oppression. Organizations are encouraged to have two or more board members and/or staff attend at one time.

This interactive workshop is designed to help participants create the spaces to be self-reflective about our cultural shaping as individuals and institutions. Participants will understand the power dynamics in society that impact the shaping of individual and organizational behaviors of bias and privilege. They will also begin to understand the skills to interrupt old patterns and inequitable practices that limit access and exclude people from organizational decision-making and services. The workshop will be set in the context of building trust and clear communication, where multiple perspectives and genuine questions can be discussed about the entrenchment of racism and other oppressions in the nonprofit sector of our society.

Crossroads Antiracism Organizing & Training focuses on analyzing internal policies and procedures that maintain white power and privilege. This shaed analysis is imperative as organizations seek to engage strategies of equity and inclusion and dismantle oppressive systems. A key strategy for institutional organizing is creating internal antiracism teams within organizations. Through this strategic organizing work Crossroads also strives to strengthen structures of accountability to People and Communities of Color and other socially oppressed groups, both within the institution and in the wider community. Board member investment in this work is critical to effective transformation within organizational life.
