Job Summary

This position requires a profound knowledge of the Human-Centered Design process and a proven track record of conducting workshops, design sprints, hackathons, or similar events while coaching others to adopt and implement Human-Centered Design principles. This individual will contribute to the conceptualization, development, testing, and maintenance of new and existing resources and projects.

Job Responsibilities

The Human-Centered Design Coach will

  • Work within a dynamic, multidisciplinary, and fast-paced organization, demonstrating the ability to pivot swiftly to new information or changing priorities.
  • Coach and guide multidisciplinary teams using Human-Centered Design methods, ensuring team members understand and apply these concepts effectively.
  • Collaborate with Design Researchers to refine the organization’s Human-Centered Design processes.
  • Lead development and facilitation of trainings, webinars, workshops, design sprints, hackathons, design challenges, and other similar events to encourage a human-centered approach to problem-solving.
  • Support teams in the development of comprehensive research plans and protocols, utilizing a range of methodologies for creating recruitment materials, conducting end-user interviews and focus groups, and crafting data collection tools.
  • Provide support and guidance to teams in establishing processes for gathering, analyzing, synthesizing, and translating pertinent research findings into actionable insights that shape compelling human-centric perspectives.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and individuals from various sectors within our field, fostering relationships with differing levels of experience in Human-Centered Design.
  • Tailor coaching and guidance to address the specific requirements and experience levels of each team and facilitate knowledge sharing and cross-pollination of innovative ideas.
  • Design educational resources (e.g., guides, templates, and best practice documentation) that simplify Human-Centered Design concepts for different audiences. (This task might include curating a repository of case studies, success stories, and relevant research to inspire and guide project teams.)
  • As part of a team, contribute to the conceptualization, development, testing, and maintenance of interventions and resources in the field of adolescent sexual health and reproductive justice.
  • Lead and contribute to writing reports, manuscripts, proposals, and grants.
  • Support evaluation of resources and tools; identify innovative approaches for improvement.
  • Contribute to cultivating an environment of creative collaboration by supporting the use of Human-Centered Design across the organization and promoting emerging trends.
  • Support the design, development, and implementation of training, technical assistance, and workshops, to build capacity of the field.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the organization’s annual conference.
  • Contribute to ensuring department and project goals are met and activities are completed according to work plans and guidelines.
  • Represent Healthy Teen Network at conferences and other events to support dissemination efforts and organization visibility; develop and facilitate conference presentations and exhibits.

Qualifications

Education, Experience, Training & Special Skills Required

  • Master’s degree in public health, human-computer interaction design, social science, UX design, or related field. Or equivalent experience.  
  • Demonstrated high comfort level conducting presentations in person and virtually, including design sprints.
  • Minimum of 4 years of demonstrated experience using Human-Centered Design (or Design Thinking) to build solutions (i.e., products, services, programs, etc.) and coaching others to learn and use Human-Centered Design.
  • Proficient in communicating Human-Centered Design concepts and methodologies in a compelling and understandable manner to a wide range of audiences, ensuring engagement and comprehension across diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in coaching others, both virtually and in-person, to translate research findings into impactful design, using various formats such as insights decks, stories, videos, experiences, and exhibits.
  • Adeptness in guiding diverse stakeholder groups, both virtually and in-person, through ideation sessions, leveraging extensive data, pain points, and insights to identify design opportunities.
  • Skilled at coaching and collaborating with researchers, developers, programmers, designers, and others in the creation of prototypes and the execution of user testing to refine concepts.
  • Expertise in mentoring and leading teams to utilize technology and digital methods to uncover user needs. This support includes conducting online focus groups, implementing remote user studies, and moderating/monitoring online communities.
  • Familiarity using various design, prototyping, and collaboration platforms (e.g., Figma, Sketch, Canva, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Miro, Mural, etc.). 
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills. 
  • High comfort level in working within a self-directed culture, navigating ambiguity, and working with tight timelines.  
  • Attention to detail and ability to juggle multiple different projects at once. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work well virtually, both independently and in teams.
  • Passion for learning and understanding the needs of diverse populations. 
  • Experience working in sexual and reproductive health or reproductive justice field preferred.  
  • Experience using Liberatory Design and similar problem-solving approaches is a plus.

  • Working Hours: Healthy Teen Network has a 35-hour work week. Staff schedules may vary, but all staff are expected to be available during core work hours, which are 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM ET Monday through Thursday, and 10:00 AM to 2:00 pm ET on Friday.
